I'm going to leave this up, but let's not use this as an opportunity to bash certain other forums.

I've had my own little adventures elsewhere these last few days! But such is the difference between a dedicated manufacturers forum and an open forum.

(Amongst other differences.)

Thanks. This is a great opportunity to talk about this in a kind way. I love that there are so many place for people to have a virtual home to share their passions and opinions. Talk Bass is a valuable resource and community. They do a great job.

In a perfect world I wish some there would realize that this forum is a company sponsored and owned forum and that it is going to be biased and insular. Having said that I really think that this is a friendly and informative place that is an asset to the bass and guitar community too. I know that some find stuff interesting here because they linkback all of the time. Its good for us and give them good fresh programming.

At the recent Anaheim NAMM show there was an industry panel to kick off the show. It was moderated by Joe Lamond the CEO of NAMM and it was titled....."What was your biggest mistake in business?" Bob Taylor of Tayor Guitars said it was having and subsequently getting involved in his company owned forum. Paul Reed Smith Told me I was crazy that he had to shut his down. Bob said it was just out of control, and Paul said the entitlement that crept in was impossible. Agressive and entitled people ruined it for many fans and diehards. I wont let that happen here and I pay the price on other forums sometimes.

This is just one channel on the internet. I think that it would be better internet for guitar players if Bob Taylor still contributed. Ditto Paul Smith. Some guys just dont need the BS.

BP, you've done much in recognizing that the Knuckleheads keep things real here. In turn, I think we return that respect and help to make this place better. A place where positive feedback actually seems to keep things stable.

I love this place! I don't know crap about the biz, I just like the basses that come from EBMM and the fun we have here talking about them. All my friends are here, so I hang out here... thanks for doing this place BP.

Even if this place didn't exist I'd still be a fan of the basses 'cause they're great. I can see where something like this could get out of hand and be a problem for a company, but with the CEO, moderators and the members here it just seems to work… and very well at that!

I’ve been accused of being an “EBMM fanboy” at another site and that pisses me ‘cause I’m not just some fan, I’m a KING! :D

Hey, this is supposed to be fun, you know, playing music, owning basses, talking with friends, learning about your favorite basses.

I’m glad this place is here, so don’t mess it up!

I mean
I like when people express pride in ownership. It really means they are passionate about what they do.

It's very cozy in here, why would I want to go to any other forum?

Now, where's my pillow?

Not real forums....just imaginery ones. I actually like the fact that ego's are scared to come by here. This is the place for me.

Well BP, you run a tight ship here and you do a good job keeping everyone on a short leash without choking them so IMO, this forum won't spiral out of control unlike the forums you cited.

I think it's fair to say that we've had some pretty interesting bumps in the road. A few were public, most are not. There is a tendency, with such easy access to not only BP but everyone else that posts, to push the boundaries. Not everyone does it, of course; in fact, mostly everyone does NOT, but you know what they say about one bad apple.

Once or twice, I've wondered how much longer BP could stay as public as he's been, but I think - and I think he thinks - that the positives far outweigh the negatives.

Anyone else here not like people having fun?

Heh! If it ain't fun, you're doing it wrong. (That applies to many, many activities.)

We do have fun, we do have a sense of family, we are a bit insular, we do tend to focus (go figure) on Music Man instruments and we have kings and lords and knuckleheads and CEOs and executives and some amazingly talented musicians, not just bassists.

When a forum is as open and big as, say, Talkbass, you can easily see that smaller communities exist underneath the big umbrella. (It's what we humans DO.) There is the Fender Mafia, the Music Man Fanatics, those who follow the Prophet Roger and so on. Still, with its open architecture, and as some of you have no doubt lately seen, the naysayers feel the need and have the opportunity to swoop down on the party and throw turds.

"I can't stand it that you're so happy with your bass! I prefer a different bass so stop having so much fun!"

We don't get that around here, not too often. Why would we?

The Big Forum(s) are valuable if you want to keep up with the online bass community and don't mind the sometimes questionable signal-to-noise ratio. I'm guilty of the occasional TB slam, sure, but I've been a member there for a long time and have learned a thing or two - sometimes the hard way.

We're valuable, too. Not only as a place to hang and BS and be a part of our own smaller community, but as a resource. And not just internally. As BP pointed out to me the other day, we provide plenty of content for other places. When a proto Bongo 6 appeared here, how long did it take for it to migrate elsewhere?

So keep in mind that when tiny-brained turd-tossers want to wreak their havoc on our parade, they're still happy to have the information we provide (and apparently still lurk and read).
