Hey Guys,
I just got the new DT album special edition with the "making of" DVD. Not only is John Myung playing a Bongo but a really nice sunburst Sterling HS and a Stingray 5. Pretty cool!

I noticed that too. I really hope they come out with a John Myung sig. Bongo. Man, I'd buy one of those in a heartbeat. Especially in that flat silver.

Gonna have to break both of our dreams. I think BP or someone within the company has said that there won't be a "signature" bass, but I think Myung will be the first to endorse it when it arrives.

I'd buy a 6er Bongo right quick as well. I don't know what color I'd get it in... maybe that year's LTD setup? That would be cool.

I just saw that a couple of minutes ago. I didn't think he even picked up 4 strings anymore. He definitely got the right one!

Here's a picture of John Myung's rack, from the Systematic Chaos DVD.

In order, from front to back:

- Grand Chapman Stick
- 4 String MM (Sterling or SR, I'm not sure)
- Yamaha RBXJM2
- Not sure what this next bass is
- SR 5

:p

Hmmm...so even JM doesn't need six strings eh.

Just wait until the Bongo 6 comes out. He will be playing it then because there are still many DT "classics" and favorites that utilize that 6th string (Dance of Eternity).

And as for the 4 strings, 73jbass, I don't think he used that for the sake of using 4 strings as much as he used it for tone. Remember that the Sterling he has has a different pickup/electronics setup. It would seems to have more to do with tone than anything else. It's either that or playability for certain parts (signature harmonics, B-less songs are two examples).

Looking at the headstock, possibly...

*Fraxture stage dives into a parting wave of moshers and lands flat on his face*
Hmm, they use a lemon polish on these floors... "he gurgled through broken teeth and copious amounts of blood before fading to black....

The last time I saw him with a 4 string was a long time ago. I just got the cd/dvd yesterday and watched the video this morning. The Sterling is an h/s version.I think it was used on Systematic Chaos.

I think the Sterling was used on two tracks on this album. I doubt he used a Sterling before this though. I know he used the Stingray 5 on SDoIT and maybe elsewhere as well. BP has said that they sent some basses to JM because he was looking into some new stuff and wanted to try some things out. Turns out he ended up using them on SC and now plays them live.

Like I said before as far as tone goes, he uses a Bongo 5 HH for a majority of the tracks and the Sterling HS for other tones that he wants that he can't get out of the Bongo (yet). The difference in tone has been confirmed by BP in that the pickups in each bass model is different from one another, along with the woods and blah blah blah.

However, the difference between his Hamaya and the new EBMMs that he used is very noticeable. This is the first time I've heard the bass AS A BASS (tonally, of course) and not a collection of low end frequencies since Scenes from a Memory. I really like his new sound.

I agree I really like his new tone and sound. But I think there has been quite a bit of bashing on his Yammies. I have played and owned both and they are well made instruments. The problem I think comes down to mixing and his selection of live gear. John Petrucci's massive guitar sound covers a lot of the sonic spectrum and John Myung kinda gets buried in the mix. Not too mention Mike Portnoy's drums and Jordan's keys. JM has much to compete with!
But I will say, I enjoyed his sound much more when he used amps and cabs. Now I think he is just using DI's and preamps to the house. I think he changed to this setup around Six Degrees. I don't think he even uses isolation cabs anymore. I wonder what we will see on this tour? Who knows...
