New Guy to the Stingray

Hey there,

Here's the story... for years I've been wanting a Stingray. I just graduated college so I treated myself to a 4 string Dargie Stingray. Words cannot explain how much i love and enjoy this place. I feel dork like for how much I play it. It actually needs to be set-up yet because it was shipped up from Bass Central in Orlando to Pennsylvania.

Well anyway... I thought all you guys might be able to help me out since i'm pretty much a Stingray virgin. For example, are there any strings or gauges that are especially sweet on the Stingray? My style is RHCP, Pearl Jam, Sublime type stuff. I switch off to a P-bass for more warm stuff. Are there any common EQ setups either on the power amp or pre amp? Anything I should no about caring for it? Is there any album that especially grasps the essence of a Stingray? Anything else at all that you can possibly enlighten me with?

A little EQ goes a long way. Start with everything in the middle, and do very small adjustments at a time.

After trying a lot of different strings on my Rays,
(stainless steel, nickel, flats, and many different brands)
I think I've settled on the stock Super Slinkys 45-65-80-100.
Nice tone, balance, tension, feel . . perfect for the music you're playing.

I keep on-board preamp and amp relatively flat and color the tone as
needed on the bass.

The StingRay is a tank so don't worry about it . .

One of my favorite StingRay albums is the 1st Rage Against the Machine.
TC used a 2-band StingRay for the entire album . .

You can get a sweet mellow tone by bumping the bass and playing up near the fretboard.

I'm living in Kutztown PA as of now. But I'll be in NYC or LA in a month or two.

I do like the stock strings... I might stick with them. Do the batteries really normally last 3 months?

Nah, the batteries typically last longer than that. Some people have gone a year or more on a single battery, even folks who play pretty often. Just be sure to unplug your bass when you're not using it; that'll save some juice 'cause the cord simply being plugged into the bass draws power from the battery.

When I bought my Stingray they threw in a set of Ernie Ball Hybrids, #2833? I may try them someday but for now I love the sound of the stock ones (2834 Pink box). They even sound great for dropping to a D. Don't see any reason to change.

Is there any album that especially grasps the essence of a Stingray?

Anything Tony Levin plays on - King Crimson, his solo stuff, Jules Shear, Paul Cole, Peter Gabriel, etc etc.
