I did a search and it turns out that it is not recommended to do a conversion to a double H.

So I guess I won't do it.

But this raises another question. What is a good way to add a bit more fatness to a stingray tone?

It's really hard to explain the tone I'm going for...

Here's a link to the tone I want something similar to. Can you guys help me with bass/amp EQ on how to get this tone?

How should I set my EQ for that sound?

EDIT: the person playing bass in that video is using a 3 band EQ, as am I.

Flatwound strings played fingerstyle is a good starting point, and from there, on a 3 band, you'll need the bass knob on full, mids flat, and treble flat or cut.

I messed around with my stingray through my crappy practice amp and got a tone i was satisfied with. Here's what I got (i was keeping in mind that I was going to be in a band setting and as a result didn't add any bass knowing it would sound fine without it).

On my amp everything is just about flat. Boosted the low-mids to about 2 o'clock. Treble is at about 11 o'clock.

Then on my bass I boosted the mids to about 2 o'clock. Cut the treble to about 10 o'clock.

Sounds pretty darn good. I'll try similar EQ settings with my real rig which is at the band's practice space and see how it sounds. i think it will sound good.

Unfortunately flatwounds are not an option for me since I'm in a funk band and I need to boost the treble and play some flea-style slap. Roundwound zing is 100% necessary. At the same time I like to have that nice fatness to my tone when playing fingerstyle.

In that case, turn up the treble pot, or use a cab that has a tweeter attenuator. Or, use flats at the brighter end of the scale. eg. acme or d'acme.

What about something like pure nickel roundwounds?

instead of nickel-plated roundwounds.

I'm going ot the music store today to try it out.

Sorry, but I'm not hip to the nuances of different roundwounds. This dinosoar says "flats = fat".

In my experience I thought pure nickel rounds were "warmer" but didn't sound "fatter." And they were still really bright. Quotation marks used on things that are completely subjective... you may just have to experiment.

I remember coming onto the forums and hearing you old farts talking about flats. I just didnt get it. Now though, I think thats all Ill use for good. Since trying flats, Ive always heard "something" in ANY roundwound string that I just dont like.

I likes the T ACME I flats, but the EB flats have sounded sweet on all the basses Ive put them on.
