I arrived home late on the 3rd to find goodies
waiting for my and my EBMM basses...

Spend most of the 4th of July indoors with this...

Here's a closer look at what's "new" - Ampeg SVT-4 Pro
and a pair of Avatar cabs, 2x10 & 1x12.

The rack is now complete!

Here's the custom base I built. My band plays outdoors and directly on the grass/ground at
times. The base will keep the cabinets clear of the floor and includes four leveling feet underneath
to stabilize the stack on uneven surfaces.

I am no gear-hound and I do not have a lot of experience with equipment comparisons. What I can say, though is that I am blown away by this new rig and so pleased I can't stop smiling. :D

Having played with Hartke for the past few years, I've been a bit "anti-Ampeg" - I like bass that punches you right in the chest as asks "So what're you gonna do about it!?" and I did not have a problem with my Hartke tone. My experience with Ampeg in the rehearsal studio was always a challenge - always a bit too boomy for my tastes. Ultimately, I realized it was the Classic cabinets that weren't doing it for me.

That's where the Avatars come in. Hard not to notice the lovefest with MarkBass here. ;) And of course there's GK that gets a lot of play too - what I've been thinking about for a LONG time based upon both the MarkBass and GK discussion was to give Neodymium speakers a try. My Hartke XL cabs weighed in at 88lbs EACH and I needed to lose some weight.

So I got a few personal recommendations, did a bit of research and took a chance. I thought I was simply losing weight, but I've actually gotten FATTER and PUNCHIER tone in the process! :)

I gigged with an Avatar 2x10 in early June and loved it. My band mates wondered about my not having the "monster stack" but were quickly blown away by the the Avatar 2x10. Adding the 1x12 competes the package.

As far as the SVT-4 goes, I am loving it! I cannot beieve how versatile it is both in tone and feastures. Liek I was blind and suddenly I can see - wow. I cannot wait to get out an play later this month!

Everything is now in place to welcome my new Bongo HSp (ETA now 8/1) - it has no idea how good life is going to be!

Nice rig. I like the base under the cab. Good job! What's your rack weigh?

Thanks - I'm guessing the rack is about 45-50lbs. The amp weighs 40lbs and I figure a couple of pounds for each of the other components.

Funny thing, it feels a lot heavier since the cabs are so light (39lbs for the 1x12 and 48lbs for the 2x10). In this transformation I picked-up a few pounds in the rack but lost 92lbs in the cabs. :D

The base was a fun project. I asked Dave at Avatar to include four of the locking corners and after explaining my plans he insisted on providing eight along with all the screws so I could finish the bottom. I offered to buy them but he provided them all for free - and threw in a T-shirt as a bonus.

It's been no fun running around looking for a rock or a branch to shove under my amp when the ground is uneven. This baby makes it all better! :)

Very nice rig, Ampeg won't let you down. I never thought about a 12" with a 2-10" cabinet. I bet its nice and punchy! Keep it cranked :D

I had been playing with eight 10's for a long time and had never felt like I was missing any bottom-end. I don't long for a 15" cab - the 12" is just enough.

And yes - punchy and cranked... The only way to play! :)

Hey, Congrats, Anthony--I hope your 4-Pro treats you as well as mine has treated me--they really do kick with the right cabs...
