So, I went into GC today to mess around with some amps and they had a used white Silo on the wall. I'd been waiting to play one forever, so I instantly had to play it.

VERDICT: I really found the neck to be similar to the axis. Close enough to where it felt very comfortable instantly, unlike the JP, which felt totally different.

SO, my question is, since I prefer a single coil sound in the neck position, is the actual neck on the Silo Special the same shape as the Silo (minus two frets)?

Also, how do the pickups compare? Being a previous Jem user, the Silo sounded familiar (which is good.). But what are the custom wound pickups on the Silo Special like?

Thanks guys for the help.

Radrock:

I can't answer all your questions, but I do have a 2005 LE Silo Special in SSS config, and I can say the single coil neck pup on the Silo Special rocks. I love it.

The only Silo I have played is my 20th Ann. Silo. The neck on that is quite different from the neck on my Silo Spec. My Silo Spec has got a fatter neck all around. My 20th almost has a Luke-like V-shape below the 5th fret. Then, the rest of it is rounder, but it doesn't feel as fat as my Silo Spec. I have no idea if my 20th is representative of other 20ths or regular Silos, because I haven't played other 20ths or other Silos. That being said, I have played one other Silo Spec, and I thought it's neck was completely different from mine. Granted, it had rosewood, and I have maple. So, that could have accounted for a difference, but I felt that other Silo Spec had a much flatter neck (back of neck).

I have a silo special and Im in NY if you wanna check it out - its my favorite guitar of all my guitars, including my axis's - Ive found that even though the silos are deemed to have the same neck they are all different, as for dimensions, the silo and the special have the same size necks with the special having 2 less frets - but for some reason they all feel different to me, maybe it depends on who sands the neck down or what have you but sime are beefy and some feel thinner and wider even than others, go figure, so check out the guitar first if yu can- of my 2 axis one is thin and one is fat on the neck, my silo special is on the thinner side but the neck feels wider than both axis - I love them all though - as for the pups I wasnt diggin any of them so I changed them out, but your style of music that you play might fit the guitars stock pups -

While my two Specials don't have radically different necks, they are different, and they were manufactured only a year apart. The rosewood board is thinner around than my maple board. I love 'em both. I had an Axis sport and liked it, but personally preferred the C shape of the Specials over the asymmetrical shape of the Axis.

The stock Special single coil neck p'ups are fat and juicy, lots of clarity and punch.

you can always get an older Silo 24 fretter with a neck single coil coil too

I had a black/rosewood HSS and a trans red/maple SSS and both sounded sweet.maybe a tad tighter sounding than the specials

the Special i got now has the same neck shape as the two 24 fretters I owned.

great guitars

I get a chuckle when I tell another player how great these necks feel, and they nod it off. Then I hand it to them, and after only a very short time noodling around, they get a little grin on their face. Comments have been “this neck feels so warm!”, “feels like velvet”, or “I could get used to this!”

Neck and general guitar comfort is a deal maker or breaker for me. I can get past appearances, I can to some degree “fix” the tone if I don’t like it, but the feel of these guitars, especially the neck, is unlike any I’ve ever played. My ONLY problem with them is, I can’t blame my guitar if I sound like crap.

I think you should get a silo and a silo special :p

Honestly, I'm glad there's a hum in the neck... I think a single in the neck with the 24frets would be a bit too bright

SILO special: HSS, WHITE SPARKLE, Rosewood/matching. HARDTAIL

There were only 4 made and they all went to Germany, sooooo I may just bid on the one on ebay with the tremolo. we'll see.

well...
As I wait for my JP6LTD, a tasty SILO headed into my arms. So, I get to play one for the first time; as an owner. This will be my 3rd EBMM in 18 mos. Soon to be 4. The thing that drove me to it, is the PIEZO. AND the color is going to be great. Autumn Red Sparkle. 2003 I believe.

I was curious about the piezo on the Autumn Red Sparkle. Does it look like an aftermarket add on, or a factory piezo?
