Well, the blackie went to the deep South of Durham, NC.

And now it appears the Dargie SR5 will go to the frozen North of Stavanger Norway!

That is, unless the EVIL post office prevents it due to the fact that NOBODY knows if I can insure it for $1500........

I have had three different answers from three different postal workers!

I have an email in to Jack, as he helped me the last time I had an issue like this.

But, I was wondering if anyone else had sent such a valuable instrument overseas?

Any info would be helpful.

Yep, $650 insurance is now the max to Norway. USPS changes their coverage and prices all the time.

FedEx Int'l service:
Norway is in Zone H and cost to ship Intrn'l Economy, 30 lbs, = $254.75
Ouch!

Talked to FedEx rep. They use declared value of the item being shipped.
Rep gave me the phone number for the insurance company that FedEx uses for their service.

PM me if you want it.

Hmmmmmmmmm.........

I have gotten the $650 top end from one of the neighbors who is a postman.

This is a pain. How does commerce ever get done between countries?

ANYWAY, I was thinking if it was taken apart and the body and neck shipped separately.

Then each box could be insured for $650

For a grand total of $1300.....

That's not bad.... but then the shipping might be nearly double.

I am going to look into Spectre's idea of shipping FedEx... It's going to cost Kenneth more kroner.

But it might be a better method all around.

Still researching.

When I am bored, I call up FedEx and get shipping information. ;)

Hope it helps.

You might want to talk to a freight forwarder or broker. A freight forwarder will likely get the package on an overseas flight for significantly lower $$$ than say FedEx for example. The downside, transit time. They will toss it on the best deal of a cargo flight, not necessarily the first flight. The upside is they will often insure goods far in excess of most major couriers. For example, I shipped an order to Russia the other day. $135,000 worth of stuff. I think FedEx didn't insure beyond $30,000. So I got my forwarder to just cover the insurance aspect of things. It was cheap too. A couple hundred dollars on $135,000. My forwarder often insures shipments I make with him in excess of $250,000.

PS, when I send stuff overseas, RARELY does anything ever get broken. We pack stuff very well mind you, but still. As such, buying insurance is an exception, not the rule for us. Everyday I ship about $90,000 worth of stuff. Only about 5% ever goes out insured. And I can't remember the last time we ever made a claim. Paying insurance on each shipment (for us) is actually more expensive than sending everything uninsured and making a claim now and again.

Wow, $322.41 is a jump from the $254.75 Economy that was posted in their Zone H Int'l shipping table. I rechecked, based on 30 lbs weight, and it lists $254.xx

Guess duties and charges for declared value added up. :(

I've done a few quotes online recently for shipping internationally, and UPS has been cheaper than Fedex in every case. Bear in mind also that both Fedex and UPS international rates went up 30% (!!!) three weeks ago due to fuel surcharges, so shipping basses overseas in a hard case is now a very expensive proposition. USPS with the neck off is the most practical option, even in two separate packages.
