Hey Ritchie

This is the freight forwarding company I use to ship guitars back to myself from Japan:

OCS Home

They are very reliable, and not terribly expensive. It cost me $120 to ship 4 basses in 2 large boxes from Nagoya to Los Angeles, and it only took 2 days to get here.

They have an office in Oslo...

Hmmmmmmmmm.........

I have gotten the $650 top end from one of the neighbors who is a postman.

This is a pain. How does commerce ever get done between countries?

ANYWAY, I was thinking if it was taken apart and the body and neck shipped separately.

Then each box could be insured for $650

For a grand total of $1300.....

That's not bad.... but then the shipping might be nearly double.

I am going to look into Spectre's idea of shipping FedEx... It's going to cost Kenneth more kroner.

But it might be a better method all around.

Still researching.

Ritchie

Send the neck insured for $650 adn the body in a seperate package insured for$650 :)

Both Kenneth and I agree that shipping it disassembled is not really an option.

I don't relish the idea of taking any EBMM bass apart!

But, the options seem few and far between. I'm checking Rex's shipping comapny next.

Ritchie/Kenneth:

I know you can get nervous about such things, but those necks come right off and bolt right back on. If that's what is holding you up, calm down.

But I can see why you might not want to ship a DD in two pieces.

Ok, maybe I did something wrong. Here is what OCS told me.

The bass with case packed in a box is 53" x 20" x 6" and 24 pounds.

They can't pick it up in Arizona at all. I would have to send it to them in San Diego.

Then, shipping & insurance from San Diego to Stavanger is: $538.85 + $72.74 fuel surcharge = $611.59

I think somebody out there doesn't like Kenneth!

So, I am kinda at the end of my rope on shipping methods.

Anyone have any more ideas.

Ritchie,

You have acrobat reader?

Sending you PDF of the FedEx rate chart for Int'l Economy, and steps to get there.
It's a pop up window

Thought guess it's moot, as the table and your estimate charge do not match.
I am sure the chart does not take into account any charge for declared value, and evil tarriffs/custom charges. :(

oi kenneth.. perhaps we should just throw ourselves on the plane to slo for the forum meeting and then transport our basses back ourselves? :D
looks like a cheaper solution... :D

Ship it UPS and ask for the shipper discount I shipped to Germany and got 12% off the quote and it was fully insured cost around 275 for a 1300 guitar and you have no worries and do not have to take the bass apart plus it arrived in germany in two days. Only way I will ship international, USPS sucks will not fully insure and now packages have to be x size and done by size of box just like UPS, plus USPS now uses fed ex for shipping so no breaks on pricing.

fingbeagles beat me to UPS.

Is there an issue shipping UPS? Do they not insure/cover items at $1500 or, like FedEX, they are expensive?

Maybe I missed it.

UPS will insure for whatever you want, on the basis that you pay insurance based on the declared value of the item. Recently I've found UPS to be less expensive overall than Fedex, however both Fedex and UPS have increased their international rates by around 30% in the past month due to fuel price surcharges.

Yeah, I am afraid that the only option for properly insuring it will be UPS or FedEx. And that ends up costing $$. I want the deal to work, but I am out of options.
