DT Constant Motion John Myung Sterling bass part...

I love the Sterling bass part that JM does in the middle of Constant Motion. Anyone have an idea of how to get this sound?

Mynan, he was using a HS Sterling, and I'm assuming he probably used the bridge 'bucker, but I would say you could probably get that sound using a sansamp or any distortion/overdrive pedal with your amp, just by adding a little dirt. I had a korg pedal for a while that had a tube overdrive simulator and when I tried that part with my Sterling it almost nailed that sound.

I think Myung was using a Mesa Boogie Big Block on the record, along with his standard rig of various preamps for other songs. I'd love to see his rig and what it's made of.

As for the Korg pedal, I loved it until it got destroyed with all my bass gear .

I still think your best best would be try any type distortion/overdrive like the sansamp or mxr bass driver and just make subtle adjustments till you get that sound. And for the record, Portnoy definitely had the right idea about this album. Its been in my cd player since it came out.

I'm thinking of a GK Diesel Dawg. I listened to a sample and liked it a lot.

Samples of the MXR Blowtorch and the Boss ODB-3 sounded too fuzzy...a lot of high end hiss/static.

The MXR Blowtorch is horrible. I was going to get one, than I tried it out and thank god I didn't spend the money on it. It really just sounds like crap. I don't know any other way to describe it. My fav. so far is the sansamp. You could always buy a Mesa Big Block 750 though . I'll have to check out the diesel dawg.

That sounds pretty good though. I bet with a lower gain setting you could easily nail that tone. Well not 100% cuz you'd have to have JM's fingers and brain. LOL. But I think that pedal would get you pretty close to that tone.

...got my Diesel Dawg Thursday. I was able to mess around with it a little bit last night after work. I got really close to the JM sound I was looking for. I ended up on the bridge bucker, eq flat on my SR5 and amp. The pedal has a volume, 3-band eq, and gain controls. I dimed the lows and highs, zeroed the mids, and put the gain at about 12 o'clock, then used the volume control to bring it close to what it would be with the pedal off.
