not auditioning peoople... but my basses. ive been asked how i pick which MM to play given the fact that i have a bunch; well, i just went thru that process so i thought id write about it cuz ive never really had an answer.
so today victim nation's headlining some matinee gig and i gotta get ready in about an hour so it was bass picking time. I feel lazy today and thought "it would be nice to just take a gig bag and not deal with a case". with that thought the first contenders where picked... the BC Sterling, HH Sterling & the HH SR4. these guys all have a scar or two and i really dont care if they get another one.
a few basses are automatically out... Blue Dawn Sterling & white sparkle have old strings so they cant come, 30th Sr4 and HS Sterling are out cuz i wouldnt wanna trek em around w/o a case... and finally the bongo is out cuz its new and the case reason.
I looked at the sr4 HH and she didnt "say" anything to me... no draw today but right next to her the BC sterling asked for my attention, notified me that shes got brand new strings and i should take her. so i plug her in... eh, nope, she's got new strings but not EB Stainless (she was borrowed and restrung w/ acme strings).
then i picked up the HH Sterling... new strings, new setup, smooth neck... has paint chipped so i dont worry about it getting scratched. i plug it in and it sounds awesome & plays awesome. she won the audition and got the gig
so how do u guys pick what to take to a gig?
oh ya... for a backup. well, i live on the edge yo - no backup; but honestly, there's no way im gonna take 2 nice basses to a punk rock club with drunk, not-so-morally-sound people around
