Hey, welcome. I put flats on my Bongo last week, love it. Though should probably get a lighter gauge. I have 50-110 flats. Flats have higher tension than rounds to begin with and then this brand is a higher tension flat than most too.

So, these flats - they're good, then?

:D

Really, I do know that flats are not for everyone, but if you're going for old-school thump, you can't beat flats on a Music Man bass.

In Dallas last year, Dave LaRue was talking to me about "Sterling's Secret Weapon", the single H Bongo, and he'd apparently also noticed that I was playing one. He wanted to know if it was true. I said, "Yeah, it is - go ahead and try mine, you'll see."

He fondled the Candy Red Bongo for a few seconds and said, "Oh, these are flats."

Yeah, they are, I said. "Well, these are perfect for YOUR gig."

But not for Dave. I heartily agree.

I put flats on my 30th SR yesterday. I wanted to try it out since the 30ths are naturally bright. The mids are amazing with this set up. I am not so happy with the lows, doesnt seem to carry as much as rounds (obviously) but the lack of thump was disappointing. To be fair, I have not tried this at any real volume yet....so I'll reserve judgment until later.

Sluggo, you may want to give half rounds (aka ground wounds) a try. They're like a mix of flats and rounds. I'm gonna try and pick up a set of half wounds today.

Will do. Went to the store looking for a few different things, they didn't have any of the stuff I wanted, so I'll order online. I'll let you know, might be a bit until I get them though.

Finally got my hands on a bass strung with some older flats. I may go back. They felt really good. Just need to last thru that transition period of weird finger tip feeling.

Couldn't agree more.
I have used flats on my SR5 for a couple of different projects.
I may just leave 'em on for good.
I used them in a hip-hop band and the bass just LOCKED into the tone of the kick!
It sounded almost like a bass sample.
(I guess since early hip-hop sampled classic R&B rhythm sections, and they all used flats, it makes sense)
I can only barely just do slap style, so I don't miss rounds that much, plus SRs are capable of super-brightness with the EQ, so you won't be swimming in the muddy bottom. [Unless you LIKE it down there... Personally, I love to do it "DUB(dub..dub..dub..) STYLE(style..style..style..)

Yesterday I went to Franklinville, NJ to jam with some people and had a great time. The drummer also played bass and had this old 78 Pbass with flats on it. I think they were the original strings, and I asked him if they were  . I think he took offense. They had at least 30 years of funk on them, I mean looking down on them it looked like stalagmites were hanging off the back of them. He said that was THE tone and strings should only be boiled and never changed unless they break  They were rough. They definitely had nothing but praise for the SR5 and the Sterling strung with Slinkies though :D You guys don't normally let flats get like that do you ? I need to send him some Wonder Wipes ;)
