Yesterday when re-stringing my jp6, I noticed this "black thing" on the tremolo (inside the guitar) which kinda looks like a screw...

I'm wondering what its function is exactly :)

pics (cellphone quality, sorry :p ):

Mr Petrucci uses his to control the temperature of the Sun.
I don't really know but someone will.

This has been covered before, but I'm not sure of the thread.

I think it's the tension screw for the spring retainer bar.

Do you mean the whammy bar ? because the screw to tighten that bar (and prevent it from swinging around) is located higher on the tremolo.

Or is the "spring retainer bar" something completely different ? if so, what is it ? I don't know that either :p

No, I think there is a detente on the shaft of the bar (that fits in the trem block). There is a piece of straight spring that locates in the groove of the bar to hold it in the trem block and I think the black screw sets the tension of that spring piece.

The screw in your pics are for the spring retainer bar to control the tension of it,it isnt for the whammy bar.

This is located behind the bar on the trem,

depress the trem and you will see a small allen key screw directly behind where the bar should be,this is for the whammy bar :)

hope that clears things up
