if you search around you'll find some info has been posted. like, as someone said, black is the most popular finish for a bass. etc

some actual numbers for LE's and Anniv instruments were revealed in past posts as well. you could probably dig some of those up thru the search

I heard that they stopped accepting orders for Blue Dawns. That's my EBMM production trivia tidbit of the day.

I don't believe forumites have near as many black and natural than the rest of the population though. When new bass pics get posted around here you don't see that many. Also, just look at the sigs of the guys around here and on this thread alone.

Jack: 11.1%
ABDouglas: 0%
Maddog: 0%
Psyco: 25%
Spectre: 0%
Me: 0%

Total: 9.7%

We knuckleheads are a unique group are we not :D

Was the StingRay5 one of the first 5-string production basses? They were introduced 1988 and I can't think of any other manufacturer with a production model at that time. Or maybe it was because the SR5 was the most beautiful bass that I didn't notice any others. :D

Well a couple of years later and a little wiser to the ways of this forum and what the general public is allowed to know, still curious about the production of basses versus guitars. Are we allowed to know what the rough percentage of output is basses these days?

Yes- forum geeks are the equipment enthusiasts who appreciate and purchase the more unique/obscure offerings. The G-pop wants a tool to do a job. Joe Bass goes to GC and gets one of the Big 3 colors (black, natural, sunburst) off the shelf and is perfectly happy. Surprisingly, the superstars pretty much use the Big 3 as well, which probably drives the walk-in sales. WARNING: TONGUE-IN-CHEEK GENERALIZATION ALERT: most (not all) big time professionals care more about their sound, their life and their families than geeking out over the new tutti-frutti bass they just got or which pickguard they should get next. And, they have a tech to keep their black bass sounding right, which is all that matters in the end.

Still a good thread, even though we didn't get the skinny.

I would imagine that to be fairly true, it's also probably down to the dealers only stocking what they think they can sell, no point them getting anything fancy if they aren't sure they can sell it, as such i've only ever seen single H stingrays over here in black, sunburst, natural and blue pearl and one bongo HH in teal pearl (that was a bit of an exception)

Awwwwww... ain't he cute? He thinks he has rights. (Just playin' ya'll:D)

BP- I think by 'general public' he meant forumites, not the public at large; as in, what can you share for our personal enrichment without divulging confidential information. (PS. not an attempt to moderate:eek:)

SmB- These days, if you turn the volume knob on a bass full clockwise, the output is roughly 100%:D

There is a fine line between a need to know, a right to know, and really something that is confidential. I wont ask bank balances and I wont answer financial or production numbers unless it is a special example

It's okay, I understand. I find this stuff interesting, that's why I ask. I wasn't sure if this was a particularly private statistic seeing as the Bass Player Jan/Feb '91 MusicMan Factory Tour article published that bass production accounted for about 65%.

I am assuming that anything that gets posted voluntarily on the forum is considered to be available to the "general public", even though it's mostly Knuckleheads that get the information.
