I got it on Friday. When you get it, be prepared to go back to the woodshed.
This book was transcribed by Jordan Baker and Ryan Maziarz with assistance from Mr. Petrucci, so you know it's spot on.

I can play alot of DT stuff. I like using alot of Petrucci's stuff as practice material, like the end of This Dying Soul, that is a percfect exercise for alternate picking and building up speed. I'm not that great of a sweep picker, and it seems that Mr. Petrucci is using that technique more and more, so I have to really try to get that down. Alot of his complete solos are still beyond me. For example, in The dark Eternal Night, Petrucci does alot of whole tone tapping, and because my hand is small, I have a very hard time doing it e.g.10-12-14-16-tap 18-16-14-12-10.
Right now I am working opn the fast guitar/keyaord unisons of In The Presence of Enemies (pt.1). They are at 190 bpm and I got them up to around 165-170 bpm.

Hi ernie
I don't think I ever get out of the woodshed - as far as JP is concerned, that is.

Learning DT's music has taught me so much about song-writing, musical theory, precision, accuracy, and passion

Although I know I will never be able to play all of their repertoire, I can play more now than I could a couple of years ago.

So, I keep up the good work with the metronome and "amazing slow downer" and just try to enjoy it.

Plus, the tab makes listening to the albums even more enjoyable when you see what they're playing.

Yep, I feel the same way. Seeing the music written out makes you hear it better and makes you appreciate it more.

Man, I need to pick this up. The Octavarium book was perfect, too.

But I love this album more, plus I have a 7-String now. \m/ \m/

Mine is on its way from Amazon US to here in Cambridge UK.

It'll be ages before my local music shop has it and I too am very keen to learn Forsaken, In the presence of enemies and the Ministry of Lost Souls.

Just glad I've got my BFR to play it on!

How do you like the 7-string, 73 Nihls? And how was the transition from the 6-string?

I tried a Jem Universe 7 string a while back and nearly got RSI from playing it, as the neck was so wide - but then my hands are probably half as big as Steve Vai's...like Lisa Simpson, I have stubby fingers!

Can anyone help me??? How many of the songs on SC are played with a 7 String guitar?? I am really interested in learning Foresaken and In the Presence, but don't want to waste my money.
Cheers

The Dark Eternal Night is the only song that uses a seven string as the main guitar.
Forsaken uses a 6 string tuned down to D.

This SC tab book is definitely "worth it."

Me thinks that the only songs using a 7 string are The Dark Eternal Night and Redemption. Even then, you may get away with playing Redemption on a 6er. It was recored on a 7er (aside from the guitar solo). In the Presense of Enemies should be ok. However, forsaken is dropped down a tone below concert pitch. You may get away with drop D on that one, but the harmonics will be fiddley as will the pedal motifs using open strings.

Not yet, but I agree with you on not being able to play it..........:D

Yeah. I've got a ton of books and downloaded tabs that I can't play.

Heck, I need to go to the woodshed just to follow what's going on. I look at some of that stuff, and I think, "What the heck?" Gotta work on my reading skills. Then, I have to make my fingers do what needs to be done. My sense of time isn't strong enough to make a lot of licks sound right, especially a lot of the bluesy ones or those darn sixteenth-note triplets that he loves. I just can't get the feel right on those. I try to subdivide them, but I have to do them so slowly that it feels like what I'm playing doesn't make any sense and doesn't resemble the lick in any way, shape, or form. I can't even tell if what I'm doing is right.

I probably need to create a simple exercise to get the feel.

Oh yeah, like Pups said, Repentance is on a 7also. Ha, shows my bias 'cause I really don't care for that song.

Oh yeah. I kind of forgot that song even existed. I generally skip it.

I love the solo but the song is just not in the right place on the CD, at least for me. It's kind of a downer after Dark Eternal Night but that freakin' solo is beautiful!

On the Tab Books...are most of DT's albums available like this? I've downloaded a few from Ultimate Guitar but I tend to find things in some of the tabs that just don't make sense as far as efficiency goes...some things seem to be played in odd positions and I feel like JP would do it differently.

As to being able to play the songs...I look it as good exercise. I've been working with a metronome a lot late and it really shows that

A) I need to practice a LOT more
and
B) I can't keep time worth a S&*T!

I figure I can practice that way for a couple years and maybe I won't feel so badly about the slop that usually comes out of fine JP6:)

Also, have any of you found backing tracks for their stuff? I know Satch has a webpage devoted to his but so far I've not turned anything up for DT (I haven't really made a big effort at this point though).
