I hate the tongue test :p, but it works in a pinch. Did it at the studio the other day, trying to kill a 60c hum. The SC battery was plenty hot! Turned out to the be the room lights rheostat.

I tried the tongue test on my hairdryer once.

That sucked.

Is that anything like the tongue test on a flagpole during a North Dakota winter?

And on a serious note...

The voltmeter test, using just a voltmeter, won't tell you a lot unless the battery under test is almost completely discharged. In nearly all cases, even a battery that won't power your device will read normal or near-normal voltage if tested with no load.

Stop off at your friendly neighborhood Radio Shack and buy a 200 ohm 1 watt resistor. Even a 1/2 watt will do, though it may get a tad warm with a good battery. Connect it between the test leads of your voltmeter, then touch the leads to the terminals of your 9 volt battery. The meter will read what the battery is putting into a load - the resistor - and is a truer indication of the condition of the battery.

I just pulled a resistance value out of my hat. What I used here is based on a current flow of roughly 45 milliamps (0.045 amps). You could reduce the resistance to 100 ohms to increase the current flow and get a reading with that battery working a bit harder (100 milliamps). Just remember to buy a higher wattage resistor (2 watt).

Sounds like I may have to start sending my batteries to Mark for testing...

There's an urban myth that "x" number of people die every year tongue testing 9v batteries, but I've been doing it for 30 years or more with no ill effects.

I couldn't be bothered fiddling with a voltmeter just to test one battery. My tongue is always close by, and it's a one handed test.

My experience when using rechargeable batteries is when they go flat it is extremely sudden. When I use regular batteries you can tell when they are on the way out. I've often wondered if the people dying due to the tongue test is a bit of an urban myth? But to be safe, I recommend the testicle test...

When my battery dies on my bass I just know. No test needed.

Now the other tongue tests I like running and they does some good for me any way.
