I really wanted to get my bongo 6 in a blue glitter finish, but I can't get custom finishes done from the EBMM factory right? So if I were to have another custom shop do the work, do you think it would affect the performance?

What are your experiences with refinished basses, i'm mostly interested in the durability, how it affects the subject bass, the price and who did the work.

(can I post pics of other companies basses here?)

It is probably not best to post photos of other kinds of basses here. Otherwise I would post a few pics myself on this subject.

I have had basses refinished, and never had any problems, as they were done by a really good shop. The finishes held up well, but then again I am pretty careful with my stuff. They were all stripped down to bare wood, the primed and painted by a guy here in LA. It was really expensive -- about $600 each, and that was 15 years ago

I don't think the performance (sound) of the basses changed hardly at all.

Hope this helps. I wouldn't get a brand-new bass refinished, because they do such a nice job at the factory, but everybody has different needs, and if it is something you really crave and dream about, I say go for it.

Happy motoring!

22, and although I thought I was a little wise to the world by now, it seems there isn't a foot that I can put right at the moment

Beth PM'ed me and I assumed (wrongly yet again it seems, must kick this habit) she had some spare time and didn't mind me asking some questions, I didn't realise that it was such an unrealistic request sorry... I suppose you are actually working on such a huge scale that it isn't cost effective to start taking time consuming special orders on board.

Here's the math, using a new $1500 instrument as an example:

$1500 Purchase price
$500 Cost of pro quality refin
$2000 Total investment

Resale on a refin will be around 50% new price, ie. $750, so your refin ends up costing you $1250.

I have honestly only ever sold one bass and traded two others, i've kept all others. I don't swap and change often and I take my time making choices, I never buy an instrument with the view to sell it.

I realise that anything I say doesn't hold much weight or value after my, ahem... introduction. But I am prepared to stick out until you realise that I am the future ruler of the universe...etc ;)

Spaceballs ftw :D

I didn't think anyone else would appreciate my distinctly evil, slightly manic and very long winded laughter ;)

i had a couple refinned by a local boat dealer
one in candy apple red sparkle
and one in candy apple green sparkle. they came out fantastic.
cost me $300 each and took about a month to do.
they had both been stripped so i wasn't worried about decreasing the value.

Your best bet is to wait for Blue Dawn to be reissued (long shot but you never know with EBMM). I think it was 5 years between the first offering to this year's Ltd Ed run. So hopefully, you'll get a blue glitter Bongo 6 by 2012 (but hey, you're young!)

don't hold your breath as it contradicts the whole meaning of Limited Edition...

That's what I'm thinking. You can have it refinished but as Mark points out it's a lot more costly than just the price of the bill. Some day that may be an issue, you never know.

I have owned a re-fin bass and the finish was nowhere near as durable as a factory finish, but like anything else price and quality will vary from one shop to the next. A friend has built some instruments and has had a local furniture refinisher spray nitro on them, but he's experienced with that stuff.

But it IS a reissue of Blue Dawn is it not? We are talking about the blue glitter finish and not the entire package that makes 2007LE what it is.

Resale value only comes into play if you plan to sell it.

And, I disagree about a refin cutting the sale price to that level. It depends on who did the refinish, and how it came out, IMNSHO.

I would tend to agree that it will devalue the bass, much like a classic car.

But it all dependant on the buyer really at the end of the day, you have to find someone willing to hand over hard earned cash... and that someone might love what you have on offer or just try and screw you down to 50% of it's original value...

Hi.

You asked for refinished MusicMan, right?

Here is mine. Built in 1978, original black. Than I bought it as "natural", and in 1998 I gave it to a professional in Zurich to refinish in "fire engine red"

Not the best pic of me, but the best one you can see the refinished StingRay!

BTW, pic was taken last week...

On the same occasion the neck was refinished and refretted.

Hats off to Colin Edwin :D

Who in Zurich, if I may ask? Always good to know who is able to do such work if needed...
