Hey Guys,

I've poked around here a bit and I think its time I get a real EBMM guitar. I have an OLP (which, by the way, is possibly the worst guitar ever. I basically redid the whole thing and customized it all, just to get it to play) but I think its time for a real guitar. I have been playing for almost 4 years now. I am 15 and love rock in general, but especially aspire towards bands like Dream Theater, players like Andy Timmons, Petrucci, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani etc etc.

I play through a Triaxis 2.0, Mesa Boogie 2:90, TC electronics G Major, and a 1960 marshall cabinet. I got lucky and worked all summer to afford this rig, and my parents decided they would let me purchase it.

I want to get a guitar that can cover all of these styles and would sound great through this setup. I could afford pretty much any Music Man I wanted, but getting my parents to let me is the hard part, so the cheaper the better. Suggestion time? Where can I look for great prices? If its new, anywhere that has good payment plans? I was kinda looking into JP7's but, they seem a bit pricey. Just looking for ideas...thanks :)

Pittman,

If you're wise you'll invest in a "quality" guitar NOW!!!

The OLP is a good guitar for the money. But, as you can see you need the "real deal".

A Musicman Guitar is the very BEST choice you can make - hands down!! And, a JP7 is icing on the cake.

You're going to end up here anyway, so you can cut the costs now by investing in the best.

Have fun choosing!:)

With the list of influences you noted, I'd be looking for a JP if I were you. Because of the middle pickup position, it can cover a great deal of sonic territory.

Well earlier you were looking for a JP6 or 7 so that is really what you want and I can recommend you get what you really want, maybe try finding a JP without peizo, cuts the cost some but I highly recommend the peizo, otherwise Silo like has already been said or an original Morse lot of tonal options there, and you really need a real ball with the rig you have.:D

+1. One of my students has one of those burgundy JP looking OLP that she got for $99. It plays as good as any of my guitars and sounds really good. A killer little guitar. I have nothing but good things to say about it.

Yeah, I have the olp, it blows! So its looking like silhouette and JP's are best reccomended. They don't and won't make a 7 string silo right? I like how it looks over the jp...but I doubt they make one.

the JP is the only MM that comes in a 7 string version.

I'd recommend just about any of the MM guitars to be honest.

The Y2D and the Luke have not been mentioned yet and are both very nice and versetile guitars.

You should really go out and play as many of the MMs that you can. theyre all quality and produce great tones... but you should also see which neck profile speaks to you. the neck contours can vary quite a bit and figuring out which one is most comfortable in your hands would be a good idea

Like Phatty said only a JP in a seven, and he was right that any one is great, I highly recommend a luke as well, my earlier comments were based on your earlier posts, just find one you like and buy it, later you can upgrade, I have bought many and never had a problem reselling them, as far as payment plans, just look around GC and musicians Friend offer them but are only worth using when they offer the no interest, which is usually in August and december.

id go for a regular JP 6string version for now mate until you figure out yourself as aplayer.the 7string version is more geared for prog-metal/rock.If you can go the extra mile go BFR JP6!

inexpensive guitar != bad guitar...

you don't always have to pay the big bucks for quality

on the side, i'd went from a silo to a jp... love the jp ;)

For a verstaile rock guitar I would highly recommend the HSS Silohoutte Special. I guess if you are really into the real heavy death metal thing, the SS might come up a bit short. If that is the case, I would go with the Petrucci. But, for nearly all other tones for metal, rock, and especially the blues, the SS can handle it very well.

I finally played a SS HSS for the first time this week. I LOVED the single coils, and being an Axis user, I found the neck a breeze to get used to. It felt great. For me, the humbucker didn't have enough umph for my style, but what a great guitar it was!
