I don't believe in the traditional sense it ever did.
Here's some pics of which someone no doubt stripped themselves.
You can tell it's not done by EBMM as the finish is nowhere close to their standards. :)

I can see why they are painted....basswood is just not visually pleasing. :cool:

Believe it's alder, and alder is usually not very purty either, though this one in particular is pretty knotty.
