It is pretty darn cool what they did to make the MBA. I don't understand who will buy it though as it has the exact same footprint as a MacBook. By footprint, I mean space taken up sitting on a desk.

Maybe the footprint is the same - but the weight is a lot less. A huge consideration for people who travel a lot (especially by plane).

the add-on super drove for $99 is interesting. I havent looked up any details yup but i heard a rumor that it only works with the Air. i wanna find out if i can pair it with my macbook.

but - im pretty excited about time capsule and apple tv.

i like the idea of having a wireless usb drive available even tho the functionality is something that's already possible. what makes time capsule potentially interesting for me is the possibility that its "smarter" than my current external regarding power consumption & drive spinning. thats something i have to research before I decide on buying one.

Phatty,
If you get one, give us a review. It sounds interesting but I'm curious on how the price will move over 6 months' time.

as with BP - im passing on the Air so its unlikely I'll ever have a review.

As an engineer the non-expandable RAM thing is a biggie for me as well. I do a bunch of Java programming too and Java (apps and IDEs) love to eat memory. 2 GB doesn't cut that mustard esp. if you have VMWare or Parallels running to test stuff on Windows.

The Air is a big engineering accomplishment but its just not practical at the offered price point. I could get around the single USB port but would likely be very annoyed by the other sacrifices they made to the make-it-thin-as-hell gods.

my little MacBook is treating me very well. too well to consider the Air. if this thing got smashed I'd just buy another MacBook.

But i cant wait for the Apple TV software update :)

im also satisfied with my macbook pro, but the size of that thing is just sooo luring.. calls at me.. saying things like: im small, easy to transport, i look hot and ill make you popular with the women! uhm... that would be "more" popular :D ;) :p

MrM

ps: i do see how the 1 usb port would be a problem.. hehe.. i already am one short

I'm not really liking it either. Missing too many features I'd want in a computer. To me it seems like a really big iPod Touch, but with a keyboard and no touchscreen.

What I would like to see is for Apple to uncripple the bluetooth in the Touch so you could pair it with a bluetooth cell phone for on the road wireless internet access.

Okay -

This machine is not designed to be a desktop replacement! And it's not "missing" anything either!!! It is designed to be a second computer - one you take with you away from your office/home base/whatever. As I see it, I could still have lived without the USB port or the DVI out. Have you researched Remote Disc? Who doesn't have a disc drive available at their home/office already?

Yeah - this isn't supposed to be a do-all machine - it's not designed for engineers or other people who do very intense processing. It's for dorks like me who have to travel all over a metro area to do business and need my computer with me. I need the web. I need Word. I need email. I need iTunes (okay - not really need). I need iCal and Address Book. I need Excel and Power Point. The MBA is for people like me - not Phatty. For Phatty they make the MacBookPro, in a nice variety of sizes and configurations. :)

Can someone explain the huge price difference? and whats a solid state HD ( yes I know i'm a newb)

Price difference is because its the 'latest and greatest'. A solid state hard disk is a hard drive with no moving parts. Rather than a little disk that spins, its memory chips like a USB key.
