Actually i'm a musician AND I like to share bootleg recordings. I was kicked off indietorrents because i didn't maintain my share ratio because I was too busy having sex with all your mothers. I'm burning my axis and never coming back here. Cheers

LOL....you're a funny KID. You can't possibly be a musician and have sex with our mothers....your balls haven't drop son....plus, you haven't seen my mom....she would have have probably slapped you silly and put you in time out.

But, I would love to see a video of you actually burning your Axis. I really don't think you will do it. ;)

Seriously, bootlegging music is illegal. Not a good thing to do. Think about if you were a successful musician and some peeps were stealing your music. Basically, you might as well as go to their house and steal their belonginigs.

+1

My mother is a special ed teacher(by special ed, I mean she teaches the insane kids with emotional problems.. think Dangerous Minds), and she's also a fire fighter.

She taught martial arts for 10 years before that and holds two black belts in two different Korean forms of martial arts.

My mom kicks ass.

If you had sex with MY mother, I'd be heading down to the clinic, buddy! That was a bad choice on your part - you really don't know where she's been.

Just kidding - I love you mom!!!

Sorry, but that's total nonsense. There are enough musicians that are OK with bootlegging, because they know the fans, who do that also buy all the officially available CDs and DVDs. Bootlegging is not about downloading albums from the net for free.

Cool. Now this thread is going to be a good one!

I don't agree with your statement. Too many people have been getting busted for downloading illegal music. Simple as that. It is obvious that the majority of the reason is the recording industry. I will give you that. But, that is their job. To protect their product and the musicians.

Metallica anyone? They spearheaded the cause to have illegal download sites removed or pay for damages. There were far more bands that were for this than not. They just let Metallica do their thing to see how it would turn out.

Are you seriously telling me....everyone who downloads illegal music goes out and buys it? Come on....no way. Why buy it if you are going to steal it? That to me is like a robbing a bank and then opening up an account to deposit your money.

Tool were seriously P*ssed off that their one album was leaked to the Net. I could go on and on.

Now, I don't discount your opinion. I am actually curious as to how you think bootlegs and illegal downloads are OK with the musicians who do the work. I just don't see it.

Bootlegging means lots of things...copies of Live Concerts, running a copy of an album off on a CDR for a mate, hosting a Website and charging people to download an album that isn't yours.
All three of the above are illegal, but is there anyone here who hasn't done the first two?? I have, but I also buy stacks of music.

A mate did me a cassette of Toto Turnback many years ago. I would never have bought it in the shops. As a result I now have bought virtually every recording Toto and Luke have made. Kooks, are you telling me there isn't a single CDR or old cassette in your house? :D

Great thread!!

Agreed, I've always understood bootlegging to be either the unauthorised recording of a gig or selling an unauthorised non-legit copy of an album / CD / tape etc.

I can't see the difference between the second (selling an unauthorised non-legit copy of an album / CD / tape etc) and downloading a non-legit copy of an album / tracks etc. from the internet - I consider both as theft.
When I work I expect to be paid for my work - and if anyone takes the fruit of my labour and distributes it (whether for personal profit or not), they're stealing from me!

My personal view is that there is more of a grey area on gig bootlegging(unauthorised recording of a gig) - as you are not necessarily stealing from the artist, I have recordings of gigs I have attended. I will always buy the live album in any case ...

If I said "No"...I would be lying to you. Now, honestly, I have some old cassettes from the mid-80's that were sent to me from over seas via tape trading. Were they the actual artists packaged music...No. I also have many vinly albums that I recorded to tape so I could listen to the music in my car. Is this illegal? Not sure, but it could be.

However, I have not gotten an illegal form of music in over 15 years. I don't like peer to peer sharing and with my security clearance, getting caught with something like that would be stupid on my part. As I have gotten older, I guess I have gained more respect for the artists in today's market. Due to all the cool computer stuff (not present in my day) it is easy to obtain material illegally. So, I simply just don't.

If I remember rightly (probably not, as I'm terminally stupid) I think that it's ok to make a copy of a recording that you own, for example, if you own a cd, but wanted to make a copy for use in the car.

However, I am most probably wrong, so don't blame me if you get prosecuted :D

If an artist wants to share their music for free, great, but if not, then I don't agree with p2p sharing.

I don't think that unauthorized recording of a gig are bad for the artists. In fact, most of the bootleg (for me a bootleg is an unauthorized recording of a gig. Now the word bootleg is used also for pirate copy) do not have a great quality : they are just items for collectors and true fans. For instance, I hunt all the bootlegs of the concert I assisted.
Well, I have some Dixie Dregs bootlegs but I bought also all the CD that Steve Morse recorded (with the Dixie Dregs, with the Steve Morse Band, with Deep Purple, with Kansas and also all the contributions : Lynyrd Skynyrd, Marcel Dadi, Triumph, Jordan Rudess ....). Of course I own also all the DVD ...
For me there is a real difference between a bootleg and a pirate copy.

By the way, now in France, if you buy a hard disk or a CDR, you have to pay a tax for the artists. I never made a pirate copy. So now I have to pay for a crime I never committed. Conclusion : now with that tax, I feel that I will start to pirate some CD just to compensate
