Whitestrat, you're absolutely right, it's odd, especially since so many MM HB guitars have trems. Maybe it's the fact the the 20th p'ups have traditional chrome covers that throws me off a bit. You don't see LP's with trems, for example, though some SG's had them. Dunno, just one of those perception things. Pretty sure if I ever get a 20th it'll be a rosewood board hardtail.

Ahh... The chrome covers... I get your point.

Thanks for posting these. I'm trying to decide on a Silo Special or a 20th right now. The 20th sounds a lot airier than the JP which sounds darker and more compressed. I get the impression that the 20th cleans up a lot better just with a volume knob rolloff.

Well, the 20th does clean up nicer, but maybe that's because the pups are lower in output to begin with? I dunno...

But you're right that the 20th is airier...:D But both played through the same amp, the JP sounds bigger. More vast sound, but compressed. While the 20th sounds more focused, and tighter, but breathes better.

I know tonewoods do make a difference, but what I'm hearing is mainly the difference between DiMarzio's amazing Virtual PAFs (the Virtual Hot PAF is my fave PU) and the - to me - much more bland Petrucci tones.

For my use the 20th would be a much better choice than the Petrucci... But seing as the 20th is (sadly) out of production, I'd probably opt for a standard Silo (which also sounds nicer to me than the JP) - with my prefered specs of trem, maple board and NO piezo.

Cheers

I know what you mean. The JP does seem a bit bland in comparison. Maybe that's why he switched to the BFRs and it's also very reliant on his rig...

But the 20th tone seems definately more lively...

Actually, there are 20ths still on sale. Why don't you check out the "Musicman Guitars for sale" thread?
