That's how I understood it as well.
Totally agree and I remember that one!! But that was like 10 years ago or so.
I stopped reading Bass Player a long time ago because it was hard to come by at local newsstands and I thought it offered little value for the rather high price (here in Europe) especially because the product reviews were always nice... which isn't very helpful.

I have subscribed for two years, but have already decided that I will not make three. Not a bad price, IMHO, but money that would be better spent elsewhere. I have learned a few small snippets here and there, but honestly I learn much more from actually playing and practicing....can you imagine that?

I have all the BP Mag issuses from the start up until about 96 or so, and there are a few articles I just need to scan.
One is the MusicMan factory tour (picturing BP playing upside down among other things) and another is that ultimate 5-string shoot out. Any day now I'll remember to actually do it, and I'll be sure to linky them in here.

I remember that article. As I recall, they broke the "competition" down into 3 different price ranges, rating a handful of attributes for each bass. If I remember correctly, the SR5 was top dog in its range & had the highest overall rating of any bass for the "low B" attribute, right?

Well, the SR5 got pretty much the max score on all attributes, and I think it was actually the highest scoring of all basses, regardelss of price. And yes, you are right they broke it down to below $1500, 1500-2500 and 2500+

Yes, that was the January 1997 issue. The SR5 got the highest overall rating scoring 5 out of 5 in every category except electronics (4.5 out of 5) The pickup mounting wasn't strong enough or something like that. It was a fun review, and they should do something similar again.
My relationship with Bass Player mirrors Strummer's story. Only I didn't give up on them untill around '99 -'00, though I probably should have. I still buy the occasional issue when I see something of interest but the thing about Bass Player is that they're so damn boring and anaemic.
I remember the days when they gave grades in the record reviews, had people like Anthony Jackson writing in the mag. Dissing Duff McKagen, Jeff Berlin and Steve Bailey fighting. Those were the days. I miss Jim Roberts.
Strummer. It'd be cool if you scanned the review Roger Sadowsky did on the SR4 in jan. '93 (I think) issue and put it up. That was a good review.

When I pick one up now at the newsstand for something I think I need to read, I'm done with it in about six minutes, tops.
Why can one brand of bass hold my interest for so long and so completely, and Bass Player can't amuse me for seven freakin' minutes a month? It's weird and I really don't understand it.

Me too! I used to love Playboy and Penthouse, but for some reason after some time, my hands got so hairy it became difficult to even turn the page. It also hampered my bass playing.
