This is more like palm-muting on a guitar. Which makes me think, will grabbing a pick and playing palm-muted on the bass sound similar to these complex mute solutions?

That wouldn't sound like an upright, but it would sound like Dr. John on"Right place, wrong time."

Yes, and no.

One of the reasons I use the BassMute is because my favorite fretted Bongo tone is EB flats, neck humbucker plus piezo, BassMute and a pick.

Unfortunately, my ancestors didn't evolve in a manner that I ended up having a hand shaped in the way necessary to palm mute at the bridge with a constant, even pressure across 5 strings while simultaneously picking over the end of the neck. :D

it's pretty easy..grab an old face cloth that you don't use anymore, and cut a piece of cardboard that is just about as wide as your MM pickup..wrap the face cloth around it once or twice (depending on how thick you want it). and put some tape around either end to make sure the cloth stays on the cardboard.

you're going to want to make sure you don't make it too thick, or you won't be able to get it out of there once it's in.
