There are currently two SR4 20th on eBay, and they have different information about the body wood in the text. One says alder, the other says mahogany. Also, Rod Trussbroken's site says mahogany. From the pics, it looks more like alder to me.

So, what are they really made of?

The newest one that was posted has a really big grain that kind of looks ash-like to me. But I am not the master of wood, for sure.

I always thought they were listed as having an ash body, and of course the maple top. Never heard of them having mahogany.

Yeah, exactly Oli, good question. I've noticed the same "disparities" lately, in the same places.

Wood is my life. I work for a wood import company in the Dr. If i can get good close up pictures of the wood grain chances are Ill tell you if it is or isnt. Im actually going to take some more courses on species identification in the coming months... Pretty convenient to me... sellers tend to con people on what woods they really use.

The body fronts are quilted or flame maple. The backs sure don't look like Mahogany. I'd say Ash, I'll get mine out when I get the chance and take a look.
BTW, the neck on the 2nd one has the most remarkable flame.

Just checked. Mine looks like a 2 piece ash body. Dayum, it's really light, too. About 8.5 lbs. I'd say.

Yeah, one of the 2 current auctions for these on ebay shows a good close-up of the back. Definitely not Mahogany, and I don't think it's Alder either. All the Alder I've seen is very uniformly light, not any dark striation to the grain. I say Ash.

Jim, it doesn't sound like there's a real strong bond with your 20th over there ... had to "pull it out" when you "got a chance", just noticed how light it is, etc... Could it be that one's a "free electron" that could be easily co-erced to move? :)

Roberto,
It was in a closet upstairs while the young'ns an' the ol' lady was sleepin'.
I haven't had it out in a few weeks, but only because I've been too busy to play much.
I'm always a bit suprised by how light it is, even if I played it 5 minutes ago.
I'm going to practice with a band I know for a ST. Patty's gig on Monday - The 20th SR might get to go. She hasn't been to a gig in a year or so.

The Few I own are Ash then the Red Stain, Mahogany was never used for this Bass.
