We're moving from San Diego to the Denver Colorado area. We lived there before, but not for very long. Just wanting to get thoughts from folks living in dry climates like that, about what it takes to make sure necks/fretboards don't dry out & contract. How about necks with a poly finish, like the 30th - fretboard conditioning only required? Also wondering about any specifics related to this for Bongo necks.

Any 411 much appreciated.

In Denver I kept a close eye on the rosewood fretboard and made sure to keep it clean and well conditioned--the last time I lived in Denver I owned a Stingray with a poly finish neck and I wiped it down after every session. I can't comment on an unfinished neck at that elevation.

In San Diego I don't have to condition the fretboard as often but since I'm near the coast I have the factory EBMM dessicants in all of my cases.

Wonder Wipes work well on the back of a 30th (regardless of elevation, I would think).

I live in even drier Arizona......

Denver ain't got NUTHIN' on Prescott!

Wonder Wipes keep things very nice on all my Balls.

But to be honest, I've never had an issue. :D

Thanks guys. So we're currently neighbors, eh John? I live in Rancho Bernardo.

So I guess another thing I wanted to confirm is that the poly itself provides climate protection for the 30th, right? Obviously, lemon oil treatments would be wasted motion on that guy, because I'd think the poly would prevent it from being absorbed at all - kind of the idea, right? So, w/w polish for the neck, and w/w fretboard conditioner for the fretboard. Probably the same should do it for the Bongo, even though the neck doesn't have a poly coat.

I have lived in Denver for the last 37 years and have not had to do much to maintain the necks of my basses. True I don't own them long enough to really see any problems...... Kidding. I have one bass I have owned for 31 years and I have never adjusted its truss rod and rarely conditioned its neck or freeboard. It is in perfect playing condition.

Yes! You should be good on finished necks like the 30th and Bongo. Keep that fretboard nice and supple with Wonder Wipe Fretboard Conditioner. You'll love the fresh orangey smell!

I defer to Beth's advice below.

Congratulations on the move to Denver. It's a cool town that aspires to be like LA sometimes and, thankfully, never quite succeeds. If you like the outdoors it's a great city and the winters aren't as bad as you would think. And they have basements, too, so an out-of-the-way place to stash your gear away from prying eyes is a possibility.

Exactly. You nailed all the things I loved about living there before, including the full basements to be found in almost every house.

And yeah, we were pleasantly surprised to find out that, as you said, the weather is actually very mild, despite the popular myth. In fact, it seems that people living there are GLAD that myth exists, so fewer people will move there. They love it when Monday night football is televised from Mile High stadium on a "harsh" snowy night. =)

And we had just started getting up to Rocky Mtn Nat'l Park pretty regularly by the time we made the decision to move back here to San Diego, for work reasons. So we've really missed that - camping and hiking up there. As you know, it's incredibly gorgeous. I have a goal of "bagging" Long's Peak this September. =)

How about keeping the humidity in your house up with a humidifier? Good for your guitars, and the people in the house, too.

I lived in Fort Collins for several years; spent a lot of time in RMNP and did Long's Peak once; it's pretty awesome.

I never had any dryness/guitar related issues when I lived there, but it stayed in the case most of the time.
