Well... I put it in, and I have to admit that I am kind of disappointed. I think the super distortion sounds very generic and when I use distortion, it gets a "hairy screachy" high end sound that I don't really care for. I just A/B'ed it with the ToneZone in my LP, just to make sure my mind wasn't pulling tricks on me, and I like the ToneZone much better. More full, more punchy and less screachy.

If it's too bright, you could add a 500k resistor across the outside lugs of your volume pot (cheap fix). It probably wants to see 500k pots x 2, or 250 total. The Axis only has one pot so that could be making the pickup seem too bright for you. Same goes with the original p'up- with the extra resistor (and less resistance overall) you might find it's got more mids and less highs, which is good for all the distortion you want.

FWIW, another excellent and HOT pickup is the Bill Lawrence L-500XL. It's the hottest passive pickup I've played and sounds excellent. The "Dimebucker" is based on it, Dimebag used a Lawrence 500XL in his Dean. And they're very inexpensive, but don't let the price fool you, it's an excellent high gain pickup.

Well, the great thing about PUs is that it's all a matter of taste... Meaning that my likes and dislikes may be lightyears away from (i.e. ahead of ;) ) everyone else's.

Yes, the Super Distortion IS much brighter than the Tone Zone and Axis PUs, but the initial poster was looking for a "metal" sound, which is why I suggested the three PUs above.

Personally, I always prefer lower output PUs - the loudest I'd go is the Norton and my current fave combo is the VHPAF paired to a VPAF neck... Oh and I love Strat-ty guitars.

Cheers

P.s.: Hejsa herfra!

Pablo,

Just wanted to say that the Norton pickup is an "exceptionally beautiful" second pickup for the Axis.

I was really stunned by the musical/harmonic dynamics and puch it yielded when I compared it to a "Custom Burstbucker" pickup in a Les Paul. There was NO comparison!!

I have that, and the Super Distortion as part of the mighty trio for my Axis.:)

Yep, I'm pretty sure. I guess I'm just not a fan of that much output from a pickup (or the voicing for that matter)

I'm playing through either an ENGL Blackmore or an ENGL Screamer combo, with a SansAmp Tri AC in front.

Well, the nice bloke in the store agreed to exchange my super distortion for a Norton - and he said that I also could come back and try out the Evo 2 if the Norton wasn't what I was looking for.

Now, this is just ridicoulous. I got the super distortion exchanged for a Norton, and went home and installed it - much better than the super distortion, but still a little lacking in the mids department. Just for kicks, I put the original Axis bridge pickup back in - guess what? It is the best of the bunch! Doh!

In the past 3 days I've had a ToneZone, a Super Distortion and a Norton in my axis, looking for great tone, and I should just have put the original back in. Boy do I feel like a doofus! :D

Anyway, I don't know why I got the impression that the stock pickup wasn't good - maybe I just didn't listen properly. Either way, I am psyched about the stock pickup now!
