Anybody out there got some useful Guitar related tips?

Lets see what we can come up with?

Tip#1

Afraid of scratching yer guitar with the buckle on your strap?
If you are comfortable with the strap's "ride height" and you have no intention of altering it -
make a strap from a leather belt - dirt cheap.
Just one piece of Leather.- no buckle to cause any rash. Finish off with a set of straplocks - jobs a good un.

Tip#2

This tip was I bleeb first mooted by CandidX.
When using wire wool on your guitar neck, wrap the wool in a magnet and that will stop the bits of debris going all over the place.

Tip#3
Here's another good use for a belt - afraid of your guitar case opening and your prized posession falling on the floor - use a belt around the case.

Tip#4
I've actually used this one -
had an accident with your speaker cone?
gotta gig tonight and can't afford to replace it just yet?

take some tissue paper large enough to go over the damage and some nail varnish to soak into the paper and it'll get you through the gig.

Tip 3 is a good one

I used to have an Explorer whos case was a piece of crap and I kept it wrapped in one of those colorful bands they sell to wrap around your luggage when you travel so you can ID it easily at baggage claim. Same theory.

I used to know a guy who gaffered bubble-wrap to the back of his guitar! He said that it worked really well. But from what I could see, instead of scratches, he just had a sticky mess of residue from the gaffer!

My fave..

If you want to take all the strings off your floating trem equipped geetar, get a rubber door stop, push down slightly on the trem arm and then ease the the narrow bit of the door stop between the back of the bridge and into the trem hole.

Let the arm come back up and the bridge will be held firmly against the door stop.

Now all the strings can be removed - bridge stays put and no scratches to finish!

Good one Bungo - that's a nice little tip for floyd users.

That's a good one from Shane too regarding the luggage "belt" around the case.

DavidL and the bubble wrap brings back memories too - I used to have masking tap criss crossed on the back of my Les Paul as it started wearing through I'd just add more tape.
It got to a stage though where after EVERY gig I was getting fed up with people asking me what I had on the back of my guitar - it worked a treat mind!!

Here's another tip
Run out of EB wipes? - Rosewood neck looking a little dry?
Use Johnsons Baby oil on it - amazing results!!!

Gonna call this tip#7

Need a nice box to hold pics/slides/spare strings,fuses, mini mag flash light, etc?

Get hold of a wooden cigar box- They have nice brass hinges and a brass sliding clasp on the front.
I sanded mine slightly and just waxed it. (although it's getting a bit worn now!)
Nice looking box to hold your emergency supplies.

That's pretty good. I used to use a stack of coins that I had taped together. I used to take off the backplate and put that stack of coins in between the trem block and the unpainted surface of the wood inside that cavity. That kept the trem blocked up well for the string change.

Great tips Spud (and everyone else) - cool thread!

I use hair elastic bands to deaden or mute strings. This is useful when in high gain mode doing crazy guitar gymnastics. Also, I use it when recording to reduce extraneous noise. I know, I know, I need to perfect my palm / finger muting skills, but it works for me.
