Player or Gearhead?

I spent alot of time and money in 2007 getting my gear exactly where I am happy with it.

Aside from purchasing EBMM #3 in January (the pearl blue Silhouette) and a Dean Markley PT-13 True Bypass foot pedal tuner a few weeks ago, I really don't plan on anything new for 2008.

I virtually have no GAS whatsoever and only want to play!!!!

My gear is way better than my playing, no question. And although playing a Costco guitar through a cheap solid-state amp would still be fun, it would drive me nuts.

It's not that I'm a great player, but that my gear is simply the tools to express myself. I collect nothing for sake of having it, and anything I don't use quickly goes out the door.

Wow! This is really cool! I appreciate all the responses. Although 25% P/75% G seems to have a slight edge, the distribution is pretty flat - falling off only at the very ends. Now I'm wondering if I should have done something different with the buckets.

Either way, it does tell me that there are a lot of 'less than expert' players like me here who really enjoy the technology aspect of all this. Maybe that's why we all get along so well at the Knucklehead bashes.

On the guitar porn, I still wish EBMM would spam me more. The closest thing I get is the SINGLE picture of the JP6 and occasional SR blurb that is in every Musician's Friend catalog. We still need to fix MF's advertising dept....

I earn all my living from playing/teaching guitar, so i reckon i'm 75% player 25% gearhead, but gearhead only relates to EBMM guitars, i dont have an abundance of anything else in terms of amps or pedals, just a bunch of EBMM's!

50/50 for me. I love learning about all the new gear coming out, but what I buy has to be functional! Mind you, that goes for everything I own, not just guitar gear.

I'm going to say 50/50. I'm a lousy player (so bad that I'm embarrassed to turn the amp up above 1 when I play in a music store ), but I love playing and even if all I had was my first guitar (with plywood body and fine roseplastic fingerboard), I'd still play every day.

That said, I love guitars, and if I had the money, I would have more of them than my house can hold. I love looking at them, I love handling them, I love playing them. I don't know if I'm really a "gearhead" though because, beyond the guitars, I really don't care that much about amps, effects and all the other things that go along with them. In that department, as long as what I've got works, I'm pretty happy with it.

Glad to know I'm not the only one that happens to. I've got several pieces of equipment that I really don't know how to use fully. I learned enough about them to use them a little, and then I just want to play through them.

I'm exactly the opposite....I get so involved with playing with the new toy that I forget that the whole reason for buying it was to make PLAYING more fun!

im 25% player also& 75% gearhead.im obsessed with stomp boxes,amps,picks,stands,metronomes,straps,strings and of course last but not least ERNIEBALL MUSICMAN guitars.

im trying to balance the scales at the moment though and am trying to concentrate on improving more as aplayer with techinique etc

Well... quite frankly, I'd rate myself as 100% player and 100% gearhead... but due to the limitation of the poll I went with 50-50.

Let me explain: I am hugely passionate about playing guitar (just ask my Mrs.!) and I am hugely passionate about the gear that lets me enjoy playing guitar. Hence, if I feel that a piece of gear will make me enjoy playing even more, I'll always find a way of getting it.

great thread! i went with 50/50

i love playing and play as much as I can. but, really, im not too good when i was in HS and college I was 100% a player. I had 1 guitar and 1 bass - both starter models - and played all the time and made great & steady progress. i my progress has stunted since then. maybe its the damn job thing...

anyways... recently ive gotten more into gear. not quite into facts and trivia as much as tinkering. My dad's an electronics whiz and lately he's been teaching me quite a bit and ive been doing a bunch of tinkering w/ a few cheapos i picked up. been routing guitars out to accept different or additional pickups etc.

its a lot of fun. the tinkering has made me really appreciate great quality guitars like my MM's. makes you get a better perspective as to what's involved in producing a great instrument

I'm more 50/50 lately. Although the gear was much more prevalent when I was also messing with speakers, PAs and desks.
