I took the plunge and just ordered a Sterling 5. If you guys can stand it, I'm a drummer first and bass is my second instrument. I think the Sterling will go nicely with my Ric and Fender fretless. The 5 string will be a new trick that this "old dog" can still learn.

This forum has been very useful for me in deciding my purchase. Thanks.

Old joke: Q:"What do you call that guy who hangs around with the musicians in the band?"
A: "The drummer."

Now a wise bit: a friend (guitarist) once heard a conversation regarding which instruments were the most difficult or easiest to learn. To paraphrase his response: "Every instrument is difficult if you're pushing to the limits"

Drums are all about limb co-ordination and independence vs. finger co-ordination. One of the best things I ever did for my drumming was to take up the bass (in terms of music sensibilities). I think taking up another instrument is a good idea for most musicians.

Hey, silverburst, I'm a bass player that's just bought a drum kit too! :)

I've always loved watching and listening to really good drummers and have always wondered how they do what they do. I thought maybe if I learnt a bit about it it would help me with my bass playing as well, so I'm learning at the same time as my son (ok, I'll be honest, I bought them for him but being Dad has it's privileges :) )

Wow I thought I was special, I guess not:p

I'm a bass player with passion for drums as well.
The first DVD I bought was Red Hot Rhythms: Chad Smith (second was Flea Master Sesson... RHCP fan you think?)

I attend Ultimate Drummers Days held in melbourne every year. You get the best of both worlds there because the have some awesome bassists backing them.

I don't get to play as often as I would like on my kit, but at rehearsal I always have a bash on my drummers custom DW kit. It's an amazing kit, I'm verry spoilt:D

It has definetly developed a minimalist bass style in me, I just love locking in the groove with the kick drum.

Yep, me too, Christmas present for my 9 year old (Christmas day is his birthday too, so I get to indulge him a bit more :) )

I'm just trying to learn how to hold a simple 4/4 beat of some sort at the moment, I have a tendency to tap away too much on the kick. I need to find a proper drummer who can help set them up and tune them too.

When our friends come round (with or without their kids) the drum kit is like a magnet - they're drawn to it whether they're musicians or not :)

Maybe we could form a sort of virtual self-help group for fallen bass players trying to "kick" their drum habit? :D

I have them set up in the living room, near my basses and the piano, and I get these uncontrollable urges to go over and thrash the pants off them - then I get there and find I can't do anything interesting! This has driven me to at least buy a book/CD and try to learn to do it properly...

My, er, son's set didn't last a day in the house. I had to set it up out in the garage. It is just too darned loud, and the house is too small. I bought it off craigslist from a semi-successful local punk band, whose name I cannot post on this family-oriented forum.

That being said, if the garage door is open, it is like a magnet for the local kids to come around and bang on it. I don't feel the least bit bad for the folks who live directly across the street.

edit: come to think of it, the tone he gets out of that bass is pretty darn sweet.
