I would use it as an opportunity to talk with your bro. Maybe reconcile anything that needs to be taken care of ... then keep it as is. It will be a reminder of the day your bro came clean with you about the ding and you guys continued on.
Maybe it will be a movie someday :)

JoD takes the zen approach :D She is right though, use it as an opening to lay it all out on the table. The bass, while killer, is a bass.

Good point, so make sure to tell him it was really really really expensive :p

And when you reconcile, if he decides to cover it, you could get another ray out of it :D

Joking aside... since it is a gift from your wife, I think selling it is not an option either (it wouldn't be for me)

To me the main question remains:
Do you have this bass for playing (is it your daily player), or for your collection?

I mean, really, what kind of man injures a Stingray? You think a Stingray can't FEEL that?!

I'm chiming in late on this, but it reminds me of a story I read a while back. Apparently a guy was at a rehersal when one of the bandmate's children accidently knocked over his favorite vintage Jazz Bass. He was completely distraught at the irrepairable cosmetic damage done to it. After some time had passed where the carcass of the bass was shoveled away out of sight, the owner realized that he was in fact turning his back on an old friend. The Jazz Bass was fixable to the point where it would be perfectly playable again. It would never again be the potential museum piece it once was. The owner finally decided to have the mechanicals repaired and let the scars remain as simply a testament to the bass's journey through it's own life. He learned to look past the cosmetic damage and enjoy the bass as he had for so many years prior to the accident. The bass still played and sounded the same as it always had and he was delighted to be playing it again.

I say enjoy your good fortune in having a wonderful instrument in the SR4 30th. Live with the chip. It's probably not THAT big of a deal, is it?

Don't hold a grudge against your brother. Live and let live. You'll feel totally different about it a year from now.

Get your keys and put an equally sized mark on his drivers door and call it even. If you let your brother do stuff like this with out retaliation he will keep doing it.

Answer these questions first:

1. Is he much bigger than you?
2. Does he normally carry a weapon?

Then I can weigh in.
