Differences between an AL SSS and a Silo Spec SSS

What are they? Aside from the obvious things like the body shape, what's the main differences in the 2 guitars that apparently delivers a different tone? Is it the wood? They're both Alder right? Are the SSS pickups different? Neck shape? Controls?

AL is ash, I believe. No rosewood available. AL has Seymour Duncan pickups. I'm sure that others know more.

I can't get used to ash. I like Alder primarily, and Basswood or Mahogany is a 2nd choice. I found Ash bodies to be way too punchy especially for single coils. It works great for humbuckers, but then so does basswood, which is lighter.

Oh well. Looks like the Silo and Silo specs are still my cup of tea.

What about the neck profile? how do they differ?

I should post a vid of my SSS AL and SSS silo special. I prefer the silo special SSS tone, but prefer the AL neck. MM90's are my favourite AL tone though. I'll get recording!

I like the neck pickup and the neck/mid combo. Sound great. BTW, where did you get the neck? I thought AL's only came with maples. Did you do a little swap with another EBMM?

The LE's for 06 all came with rosewood fretboards ( even AL's!), and in 07 I ordered an LE Albert with rosewood board thinking it was going to be the same deal, it was for a while then it wasnt, good thing i got in early!

According to the EB website Silo Specials are Southern Ash and Silhouettes are Alder. Are ther any SS's out there with Alder bodies?

The Silo Special is alder.

I believe that's one of the kinks that still needs to be worked out in the new website. The Silo Special incorrectly includes a lot of AL information including the body wood. If you notice the pups are also incorrectly referenced as Duncan singles or MM90's and the string set is the AL custom guages with the 16 G.

The singles in the Special are custom Dimarzio - most closely related to their Blue Velvets. The AL's are Duncan APS-2's.

With respect to the neck, they are both C but to my hands the Al seems to have a bit more girth, with the special being a bit flatter.

oh! i see... wow. you learn something new everyday! Could that be WHY your ALs also sounded significantly different compared to the Silos?

how about putting the silo pups into the AL for a go?

Well one wouldnt expect the AL and Silo Special to sound the same, just similar thats all. Both are awesome!

Rob, if I had an AL and a set of SS p'ups just sitting around, I couldn't resist trying them out. Maybe it sounds like crud, who knows? I think they'd sound cool, though. And it's not as though you'd have no other stock ALs to play!
