Guitar convert back again for more of your help in getting the "Ball" rolling with my Bass playing ......................
Which 4 String EBMM would you say should be best for very bass - driven music like The Police, Bob Marley, etc.. ? And why ?
THANKS!!

Bongo....the electronics are quite flexible and I think I would make it an HH so you could get some thick front pick up sounds...

There's lots of bongoloids on here, ignore them ;) seriously any EB bass should give you tonal flexibility. I find my sub bass suitable for metal and for very bass driven funk, just change the EQ on the amp and the bass a little and you've got a whole different sound. Of course the bongo is more flexible, but it's a bit of an acquired taste. I think you'd find that the sterling or the stingray would more than meet your needs. it's just a case of what you prefer ergonomically or in the way of looks. The stingray needs no explanation... the sterling has a slimmer neck, more like a jazz neck, slimmer than the ray or the bongo and the smaller body feels nicer to me. But it's up to you.

Bongo single humbucker.

We had quite a few bassists over here a couple of weeks ago, and the bass being used in the studio was my 5H. We changed bassists a time or two and I figured that with about forty basses to choose from, someone would eventually go get something else.

No one did.

Do not underestimate (or is that misunderestimate?) the power and flexibility of the single pickup Bongo. There was a wide array of music being played with that bass, and it did it all - quite admirably, too.

Jack

They don't call Jack "Lord Bongo" for nothing.

I am a proud owner of my DD Bongo 5H, after great advice from Jack.
Single H pup on Bongo is at the sweet spot. It is one of my favorite.
As you mentioned, a 4H would be your friend.

Another great choice, if you can find one, is the 30th SR4 stingray.
Mahogany body is pure tone. Love at first sound, and sight. :)
or is it sight then sound *shrug* ;)

Ignore all others... given your above choice of music, a simple 2 band EQ StingRay is your friend. Only three knobs, and you hardy can dial in a bad sound (but as with every EQ avoid excessive use of extreme settings).

Also, it helps to choose the right colour; the vintage burst is good for a more roundish tone, a black one will be louder. At least they say so. ;)

Thanks for all the great advice so far guys! Its clear that there probably appears to be no "one right answer" .
Based on my overnight research, here is what I am leaning towards ..........

3 EB's as follows:

1) Sterling 4HS

2) Stingray 30th Anniversary 4H

3) Bongo 4HH

Would that be a good combination??

You can't go wrong with any one of those on your list. I would tend to lean toward the Sterling H/S, but for no other reason other than I'm slightly more of a Sterling fan due to the neck.

Good luck and remember to post pictures! :D

Even though my screen name here would lead you to belive I'd say StingRay. My Bongo HH just blows me away everytime I play it with my band. I like a Fat thumpy tone and the front H pickup just rocks for that and it has amazing clarity too.

Yeah, that combo should about do it. :)

If you were going to pick just one, I'd say Bongo. My sig will soon show 1 SR and 1 Bongo, but same goes for me ... if I were going to settle on just 1 EBMM, it would be a Bongo, and just a few months ago (before I had spent some qt with one), I wouldn't have believed it. Reasons: Tone/tonal variety, the neck profile is my favorite of all EBMM's, light and very comfortable, and the overall feel/playability are in my opinion, superior.

Edit: Regarding Bongo pickup config, for me, it's 4HH. I can't comment yet on the H, since I haven't played one.
