What other pickups has anyone tried in their JP6. I was toying with replacing the stock ones in mine. I was thinking like Semour Duncans or maybe Rio grandes?
I know there are alot of boutique pickup makers out there.

What don't you like about the stock ones? My understanding is that they are chosen very carfeully to match the woods and tone of the basic instrument. Unless you know sound you are looking for it could be an expensive search.
That said, Bareknuckle pickups in the UK are superb, but there are a lot to choose from, and youy need an idea of what you want.

I never said I don't like them, I just want to try something else. I have a JP7 that I'm going to keep the stock pickups, and I have an Ibanez rg with a steve's special and air norton in it. I love the way my JP6 plays just looking for other tone options, so I was curious if anybody has tried other pickup combinations in this guitar and what they sound like.

You're slightly crazy. :) I've only heard in passing about people changing pickups but don't remember anyone on this board changing them out. They are some great pickups, IMO.

I changed mine out out for SD's.
59' in the neck and a custom custom in the bridge.
The stock D-Sonic was a a little loose in the lower midrange for my tastes. The neck pickup seemed to tail off in the high end to much (for me).
The Stock pickups are still sitting in my pickup box with all the other pickups that didn't quite "cut it". Tastes change, but the SD's have been in well over a year and I don't see a need to change them.

i have a Bareknuckles warpig in my bridge position (neck is great, needs no changing)
it sounds good now, but i was an active guy, i LOVE emgs and would love to try the new EMG81tw (emg with split) but i can't figure out which pickup i could use for the neck position (don't like the EMG 89 and i only like the EMG 60 for the neck and that has two wires, i would lose the parallel position which i like to use).

and btw petruccirocks02, in the show in mexico (from the bootleg in bucharest 2nd dvd) petrucci uses EMGs in his JP6 in pull me under / master of puppets. (at least it looks like emgs)

I really like the sound of the SD jb pickups, I want something more vintage sounding. Like I said I already have two other basswood guitars with the same pickup combintions as the stock JP6. I'm just looking for more tonal variations. And as far as me being crazy or it being sacrilege, well you know what they say, one man's nightmare is another man's dream.

I also have been thinking about changing the d-sonic.
I find it a bit too sharp.
but I really wouldn't know what to put

From what I've seen, Kirk Hammett had a JP6 with EMG's in it, which was just sacrilege in my opinion.

He does? What? He just found out his KH-2 wasn't cutting it?:D

Anyways I swapped out a D Sonic for a Steve's Special on mine. I sort of prefer the Scenes From a Memory and before tone than his current one...

Those JB's to me are muddy suckers...maybe try a set of SD pearly gates?

A mate of mine has swapped them for the set Satriani uses on the JS.
DiMarzio Fred (b) and PAF Joe.
IMO, the best pickups dimarzio EVER made.
Plus, they are voiced for a basswood-maple-rosewood bolt-on guitar (what the JS is, that is), so you can more or less hear what they would sound like on a JP6, by playing a JS.
Ofc, JP6>>>>>>JS construction-wise, but that shouldnt make a huge difference.

If ever, i do buy a JP6, which i 99% will, at some point, i will give the standard pups a chance, but will most probably do this swap too.

Satch is the sound!

You should try to take one of the stock SS pups off of archtops hands. Sounds like he'll have a second one to add to the box soon. :) I used to have a white jp with a d-sonic and it sounded great in that guitar, but when i swapped the SS in my MD JP out for the DS it did not sound like I remembered. I went back to the stock SS and haven't looked back since...

archtop: I bleeb JP used to use a ToneZone in the early days of of his Ibanez guitars... might be worth trying out...

A ToneZone and a Humbucker from Hell on Images and Words. I'd try that. PLEASE put the HFH on the neck slot, who knows what might happen if you put it on the bridge

The problem with this is that the JS uses a 22 fret neck. This gives a very favourable position for any pickup at the 24th fret position. The JP6 has a 24 fret neck. That neck pickup doesnt' sound the same. I have a PAF Joe in my 20th Silo. Almost, but no cigar... and it's basically due to the position.

Yeah I saw that. Pretty badass. I'm sure he paired the EMG's with the IIC+ to nail those Hammett and Hetfield tones. Right on.

Guess the KH2 wasn't cutting it :D. The Kirk Hammett thing was from a long way back. He was using a JP6 in the studio for writing one of the albums and it had EMG's. There's a pic floating around somewhere here I believe.
