Hardtail, or Tremolo on a Morse?

Hey Guys,

Just did a gig with my ASS. And to be honest- it isn't doing it for me. I just can't fall in love with it. I turned the volume knobs up and down, tone up and down, and fooled with my amp a ton. So I think I'm gonna get a Morse.

My question is: Hardtail or Trem? I like both, but I have a petrucci, so I have a great trem guitar. However, I use it a lot. I also like alternate tunings. What do you guys think?

Also, do you guys think a regular morse is tonally way different than a Y2D? I love the looks of both- I just can't decide.

Well Mr. Pittman,

First it would be hardtail, only trem on a Morse is a FR and hate them, second great guitars but no body contours so if that is an issue think about it, never had a standard Morse but the Y2D PUPS and PUP config were great, just found it hard to play.

Bottom line if you want a Morse, Y2D, Hardtail, any color

Cool, fing. Very helpful. What did you find tough to play about the morse? Just the switching options, or the fact that it has no contour? How'd you like the neck?

Neck was OK seemed a little wider , Y2D PUP Config Nice, just the lack of body contours and over all feel but we are all different, but again all EBMM are great just each of us has our preferences.

Yes rob- I have. See, that's my problem. I loveeeee humbuckers. I have a strat already- which is by no means ever leaving. It was my first guitar, and its reallllly cool. So, I already have my single coil sound covered, but why keep one ball that doesn't get use? So i figure sell it for a new ball. And I love les pauls- which have no cutaways. But, I'm a ball player- and morse is one of my heroes. I'm thinking a Hardtail Y2D in either purple sunset or deepurple finish. Not a fan of the TB...would foggy like to feed my gas and give me pictures?

You love Humbuckers eh? Ever try a standard Silhouette? I would give that a try one of those along with the Morse.

I also concur with the others about the lack of contours of the Morse. It's either a love it or not thing. If you can't find a Morse to try, look for a SUB1. The body shapes are very similar. If you have no issues with the lack of contour on the SUB1, the Morse would be a great guitar to have. Tonally it's an awesome guitar.

The Silhouette to me is more confortable and has some great tonal options as well. Personally I didn't find the necks on the Morse and Silhouette to be all that different - both were awesome.

Definitely. I think I like the Y2d Still though, I have played the Silo HSH and it is also awesome! However- those colors are sick on the morse- not that pearls and some of the trans colors aren't- just that Purple Sunset looks so special

This is the major factor that made me bought my 1st Ball!! No body contour - you will learn to position yourself to play it. Like what I did.

I think it would also improve my poor technique. I Do exactly what the body contours cause, I lean in over towards the neck pickup. I'm now frantically trying to sell my Axis Super Sport so that hopefully I can order one.

The body contour issue or lack thereof is weird for me. Sitting down, contoured bodies i.e. silo & silo special, are so sweet to play. However, when I play standing, it's a whole other ballgame as I find myself struggling more and making more mistakes vs. the non-contoured bodies (think P*S, and Melody maker).
Now I personally love the neck and the awesome sound options of the silo spec, but if comfort is that big of a concern, I'd say try the morse.
I've talked to Rob about the Y2D issue before. Perhaps his issues were with the 12" radius neck of Y2D vs. 10" on his Axis, Silos, and ALs. Plus, based on his vid clips, it would appear that he plays things with less gain. The Y2D & Morse (while prob clean up nicely) may be suited more for heavier gain. Perhaps Rob will offer more input on this.
With re: to the Morse and/or Y2D, the most common complaint that I've read on net with people who didn't appreciate it had to do with the pickups and their sound. Watching the vid clips of Morse and Pappa, man, that guitar sounds awesome!

tone wise ...i found the floyd morse suprisingly similar to the hard tail. there is an ever so slight difference........but not in any way that is negitive in any way. it sounded great.

It doesn't matter what anyone tells you, you're going to have to find out for yourself. You remind me of myself actually. My first guitar was my Petrucci. When I decided that I needed another I bought an Axis SS, but didn't bond right away with it. Sold it and started buying and trying evrything in the EB line. I've had them all, AL, Y2D, EVH, Luke, Silo Spec, 20th... sometimes multiples of each. I can't talk you into or out of anything, you'll have to figure it out on your own.

When I bought the honeyburst Axis the light finally clicked in my head. Look at my sig and you'll see. That's the guitar that does it for me. I still love and play the Petrucci, it'll never leave because it was my first but 9 times out of 10 I grab for one of the Axis SS's in whatever pickup/trem configuration I need at the time.

Try a Y2D, you'll never know until you do. If I was to buy a guitar just based on the opinion of two guys who I consider great friends as well as great guitarists, Beej and Tommy, I would buy a Morse and or another Y2D. I didn't care for the non-body contours of the Y2D. Loved the neck, pickups were great... It just wasn't doing it for me.

I can't tell you what it is exactly about the Axis that finally hit me, people complain about the body on those all the time, but the second time around it just stuck. They fit me like a glove and I enjoy playing them. I gotta want to play them, I've had a couple of *really* nice looking guitars, but at the end of the day they went out the door because I just couldn't bond with them enough to want to play them.

It could end up being a costly journey, but you'll get there eventually.

Oh yeah and to answer your original question, hardtail... me no likey floyds.

Thanks for all the input guys. And yes, I'm with you Fsmith. I really don't even need another ball, my petrucci is so perfect I love it. I just want to get something to replace the ASS. Why keep it if it has no use? I was thinking BFR- and then realized I really don't need to buy one. Being 16, it would be quite ridiculous. I was doing some research last night and now I'm stuck between a Luke, Morse, and Y2d. The only problem is that the closest stores that may have 1 of those are about an hour away, and the only one that has all three is Royal Music in NY, a three hour drive. Maybe I'll take a day trip.
