Hey, thanks Dan for the great service!!
It should be a SR 4 HS in Lava Pearl with rosewood board and matching headstock (sorry, forgot to mention that before)

Hi, I have two beautiful stingray basses, both are 4 stingers and was wondering what age each of them is?

The first is natural blonde with black scratch plate serial Number 45989 this I puchased from a dealer in '92
The second is black with white scratch plate and mutes serial Number 32127 this I picked up by chance at a really really low cost in '98 (recently had it fulled serviced by Tony Thomson - Lutherist - and the neck was dated '82)

drew, your 2EQ Natural Maple was completed and shipped to the U.K.on August 16 1995, and your Black (actually the serial number records state that this one is a Blueburst) StingRay would have been completed on Nov 30 1990 except that it has to be incorrect, most likely it was switched ..... that's curious about the neck as well - it must have been switched also. Ernie Ball did not produce Music Man until 1985. If the headstock reads Ernie Ball, there's no way it was an '82 neck. To be honest, not much about this bass adds up, unfortunately.

anyway, have a good weekend -

Dan

Hello, I've been lurking around the forum for a while now (while obviously having huge GAS over certain EBMM basses) and just recently got myself a used SR4. Black, with black pickguard, matching headstock and rosewood fretboard (it's a BLACK bass).

I'd like to know the year it was made and the original specs (to check for possible mods that may have been done by previous owners or anything). The serial number is E56277 which I think would mean it is rather new, but I would still apreciate to know some more :D

Thanks for your help.

Hi Dan.

Your Serial number is consistent with 1988 which will make it an Ernie Ball Bass. The body should have a cut-away waist contour on the rear (Pre-EB Rays have slab bodies). As the EB Basses were made in San Luis Obispo (as your rear decal purports), the neck would seem original. The string retainer should be on the A&D Strings (it's on the D&G for Pre-EB Basses). Rear headstock decals appeared for the first time at the end of 1987 which would also confirm that your Bass is 1988.

Is the date on the neck or the body?

Any pics? It would be nice to see this Bass

P.S. As with your Bass, the Pre-EB serial numbering system ("B0xxxxx") was used on some of the early EB Basses.

I've got some pics, where should I send them

at this moment i own 3 Stingray's:

2-e.q./maple/sunburst/white PG/serial: E46633

3-e.q./maple/natural/black PG/serial: E60433

3-e.q./rosewood/black/black PG/serial: E63633

i find it very coincident that the last 2 digits are the same for all the basses, and for 2 basses the last 3 digits....

i'm having plans on selling or trading my Fender basses (except my 1st bass which me and my dad made fretless 8 years ago), so i can go over completely to M.M.

Leonl, welcome to the Forum and congratulations on your new bass! It was completed on 10/03/06. Looks like nothing has changed, the specs all match up. It was originally sent to GC.

Cheers,

Dan
