What's up guys? I was just wondeing has any one thrown a luke emg set into a silo special with a RW fret board? Did it pretty much nail the Luke tones? We have spoken in much detail on this forum about the Luke's neck and the Silo Special's neck. I was thinking that if someone could not get used to the Luke's neck they could just drop those pick ups in a Silo Special and basically have a Luke with a Silo Special neck.

Hi fella,

yes indeed - after getting a friend of mine on the EBMM virus, he first wanted a Luke but apparently could not afford it. He got a 2nd hand Silhouette Special for a real steal-deal and then got a pretty good price for a SL-20 EMG set on ebay. We converted the Silo Special to those PUs and just had a little work to do on the PU holes in the pickguard. I guess it pretty much delivers the Luke's sound now and it was not much work.
Me too, being an absolute Silo Special addict, am thinking about such a conversion. Well, I sure will not change anything on my existing Silos, but should a good deal on another one come along I really might do that...

Good thing - nice result, so if ever you don't get along with the Luke's neck - go for a Silo conversion !

Cheers

I did this to my Silo Special (EMG SL-20 kit). However, mine is a maple fretboard.

I haven't actually used or heard a Luke, so I can't comment on how much it resembles the tone.. but, I can say I love the tone I have. I prefer it to the original Silo HSS pickups, they were great, but that's purely my personal preference and the tones I like for the styles I play. To me my new setup more resembles the strat tones with the benefit of the humbucker than the original pickups did.

As already mentioned, a small amount of work is required to file out the pickup hole in the pickguard (bridge humbucker only - the singles fit no worries). This was minor and being a complete handyman novice I managed to do this with little effort. I just used a small file and "squared out" the hole. Other than that the install was a piece of cake.

Well I am in the process of doing this. I bought the Luke PG assembly on the Bay and I just need to decide on a PG and complete the work. Mine Silo Special has a RW fret board so I'm hoping it'll sound awesome I'll keep you posted!!!

I had a Luke and loved it, I just wished it were a hard tail, love em!!! So, I decided to go down this road, I have a feeling that I'll be very happy. ;)

That would look so cool with a white SS and RW board with black headstock!!!

I would speculate that it would sound very similar to a non-BFR Luke, but slightly different because of minor differences in body chamber size and location between the SS and the Luke.

I really like the style of that Luke pickguard.
(Edit: Oops, it's a Strat pickguard - probably won't fit the SS properly.)

I'm looking forward to seeing and perhaps hearing how this project turns out.

I still would like to hear what the Luke mods sound like.
I don't play so great either but I have a few guitar bytes on YouTube none-the-less. I play for fun. I'm hanging on to my day job. The proof:

Edit: Thanks Glenn.

The Luke EMGs on a Silo Special with a maple board sounds like a really good idea. I actually don't even own a guitar with a rosewood fret board right now. The Luke or Silo Special with Luke EMGs would probably be my first.

Lukes are great guitars, I'm not a big trem guy and much prefer hardtails and their sound. Thats the reason I'm going with the Luke EMG's.

Either are great choices, but if you use the trem, give the Luke a shot, it's just a great all around guitar!!!! From one fabulous player!!!! :D

This thread has piqued my interest in active pups enough that I bought a Vince Gill system for my old MIM "F" mfg guitar. The system has a "SPC Presence" control that's supposed to give the single-coils a more humbucker-ish tone when desired.
If this system works out I'll definitely be doing my Silo the same way.
I'm stoked!

Volt excellent!!! I'm still undecided about which PG and for me that's the only hold up.

More to come, hopefully soon. :)
