Gentlemen, over the years we've seen the Silo Special and Silo change. We've seen changes to other models too.

My question specifically is the following. What is the usual impetus for change when it's decided to change the components of a particular EBMM product when it's not an artist driven change (e.g., JP going from the original JP to the BFR)? For example, what was the impetus for change in going from Schaller pickups to DiMarzio PAF Pros to Virtual PAF in the Silo? Wilkinson bridge to Music Man bridge? That sort of thing.

I think the change from Schaller to DiMarzio pickups was nothing to do with the quality of the pickups, it was more to do with marketing and market forces.

Yeah. Dan mentioned it somewhere in another thread. I can't for the life of me remember which one.

I think this is the one you mean
Actually a 1988 model Slhouette would have

* Schaller hardware
* Schaller pickups (that's right!)
* 6-bolt neck
* possibly a real 80's color (Seafoam or Peach for example)
* possibly a conversion varnish finish
* a finished neck
* probably would be a really cool guitar

we are constantly evaluating whats out there. In the 80's schaller made a really good pickup. DURING THE LATE 80'S WE STARTED WORKING CLOSELY WITH DI MARZIO. We did because they were good and Seymour Duncan turned us down.

If there is a better pickup/bringe/tuner we will continue to update the instrument.

Why'd SD turn you down?

From a business stand point I can't see how it could ever be bad for them to have their products in more guitars (especially since they write the damn brand name on everything, it'd just be free advertising for them)

Albert uses Seymours because he is friends with Seymour. SD probably wont admit this now but they didnt think we were hip enough in the mid eighties and they were very selective back then. I asked and was rejected in a very arroant manner It has cost them hundreds of thousands of dollars not having faith in us.

I like all of those people there. They are very good at what they do and made the marketing decision they felt was appropriate but it kind of motivated me back then. Di Marzio welcomed us with open arms and I think that Steve Blucher of Di Marzio is a wonderfully talented man.

Personally I'd rather have Dimarzios than Seymours.
Both are great pickups but Dimarzio carry better connotations with me.

Dimarzios ANY day. I'm personally glad that worked out because that was a huge determining factor when I was debating between buying a green EVH and green PRS in 92. I'm so glad I went with EB.

its not revenge...it just isnt forgotten. Seymour Duncan Company is a very good company I just am giving you some inside history. They made the call they needed to make at the time.
