Lost Newbie? Wolfgang or Axis SS

Here's the deal. I am trading a Les Paul Classic Antique for either a Wolfgang Standard Deluxe with Stop Tail or EBMM Axis SS with flame and tremelo (vintage) +cash. Both are in mint shape.

I owned a wolfgang a number of years back and really liked the neck. Anyhow, please help me decide which one to take on the trade.

Forgot to mention that the Axis SS has a rosewood fretboard.

The Axis is the finer instrument, all day long. The build quality is outstanding, and the neck is amazing! After I bought my first EBMM , I sold my 12 Wolfgangs ...................... immediately!! Good luck with your decision! ( I can also tell you that most of the guys on the various forums that own both, MUCH prefer the EBMM guitars!)

I vote for the Axis SS. I own a Wolfgang, an EVH & an Axis Sport, and although my Wolf is a very good instrument, there is a noticeable quality difference w/ my EBMM guitars. Plus, you get much more tonal flexibility w/ the 5-position pup switch on the SS.

Actually both the wolfie and Axis SS involve the trade plus cash. More cash is involved for the Axis.

I don't need a trem but having another option is always nice when playing. Also, I am leaning towrds the Axis because of the flexibility of the pick up switching and again having more tone options.

I'd say the Axis SS. More switching options than the Wolfgang, and the vintage trem system on the SS is rock solid. You'll never need a Floyd again.

I own a Wolf hardtail and an EVH. I can say without question the necks are different. It's very possible that you could like one and not the other. I like the EVH neck but it can be a bit small/narrow at times, especially if you have larger hands. The Axis neck is slightly wider at the base than my EVH neck but is nowhere as wide as the Wolfgang neck. Also, the Wolf radius is 15" while the Axis is 10". They both have a well-played feel. But beyond that, they're different almost any way you slice it.

The Axis SS will be more versatile over all because of the switching. And I generally like the pickups better on my EVH than I do the Wolfang pickups. This could be an issue for you. I consider the EVH/Axis pickups to be modern with a classic vibe. The Wolfgang pickups are hotter with more low end and are more modern IMO. EVH/Axis is smoother. Wolf is still warm but has more teeth.

Play them both as much as you can prior to the deal. That will probably help you make up your mind more than anything. As long as it fits your preferences, you really can't go wrong with either one. I know this is the wrong board to be saying that the Wolf is actually a good guitar but that's what my experience is. I'm glad I own both and each has it's strong points.

I own an Axis but have played many Wolfgangs and other Axi. They are different but I would say both are very good guitars and have the same type of vibe. The Wolfgang to me felt like it had a little more offset body, a slighly thicker neck with a flatter fretboard, and there was no "tummy cut" on the back. IMO you would probably be happy with either one.

You may also want to wait for the Fender Wolfgang to be released as the specs for that one aren't out yet but it looks interesting as well.
