Many many years ago, like back in the mid-to-late '70's, my friend Frank Dunch (RIP :() who was one of the best guitarists I've ever heard taught me a cool way to play a G-major chord that most guitarists I know aren't aware of.
Well, I'm going to pass it on.........if you don't already know it.

E---3 (1st finger)
B---3 (1st finger)
G---O (6th finger - lol j/k)
D---5 (4th finger)
A---5 (3rd finger)
E---3 (2nd finger)

Enjoy. :)

Edit: I added the fingering.

Okay. Thanks, I didn't know where it originated.

I remember struggling trying to learn some Zeppelin solo and Frank would say "that's pretty easy", then he'd precede to show me how well he could play it. lol

D--3---5
A--3---5
E--1---3

one of may favourite Purple Songs, A Touch Away (a little secret tune from Purpendicular) starts this way

Man this is a real great thread!!! - I sure hope loads of people contribute to it.

I know that sometimes you'll just say "yeah I already knew/use that one" but if you just get a couple of ideas from this thread then great stuff.

Now I can't read music and I don't know my chords, and thats after nearly 40 years of playing :eek:- I play by ear - by look-see so here's my contribution that will give ya 2 chords!!

E--12--
B--11--
G--11-
D--11--
A--11--
E--11--

then

E--11--
B--11--
G--11-
D--11--
A--11--
E--11--

(I do know this much theory) - nice used as a cadence at the end - played clean and played in a rake - nice to use the thumb too.

Try "it" - you'll love them or hate them

Never played it like that before, I'm assuming the low G is is fretted with the thumb? (And not wanting to state the bleeding obvious, it's actually a G5 chord, so will work for Gmin as well).

yeah I'm also wondering how that G is fingered too...I can't get comfy with it ;)

Anyway , my favourite chord is the one below that SRV uses a fair bit in his mellow jazzy stuff, remember to move it up and down the neck too:

E x
B 5
G 6
D 4
A x
E 5

How are you fingering this. I tried the thumb on the low G note and then just fingers and could not get it..........I'm a technician.....I need to do this, now that I've heard about it.

Use the first finger to fret the two highest notes. Than the second finger to fret the low G on the 6-th string. Then the third finger goes to the 5-th fret on the 5-th string, and the pinky to the g on the 4-th string.

That was the way the was most comfortable for me but it really takes some practice to be able to get it fluidly and have all the strings ring out.

When I tried the thumb I found myself muting the open G string. As well it was more difficult for me to move up and down the neck.

I know almost no music theory whatsoever except for the circle of 5ths, so I'm always excited to learn new chords and some theory.

I sure hope loads of people contribute to it.
I hope so too. Thanks for your contribution.

Here's the happiest chord ever. :):):)

Eadd9

E--0--
B--0--
G--1--
D--4--
A--2--
E--0--

Take away the 1st finger and you have the saddest chord ever.:(:(:( For added fun, slowly strum the chord string by string from high to low (up strum) with the pick against the bridge. You'll get this tingy sound.

Emadd9

E--0--
B--0--
G--0--
D--4--
A--2--
E--0--

a cool way to play a G-major chord

It's not a Major chord nor a minor chord (there is no third). Thus you can use it in a lot of context.
Open strings give always a nice touch to chords. Just listen to Alex Lifeson of Rush (Test for Echo is a great example).

E x
B 5
G 6
D 4
A x
E 5

Another cool thing to do with this is to bar the 1st finger across the 4th fret on those same three strings.

Then you can go from

A6 to Amaj9 by moving one finger
E -x------x-
B -5------5-
G -6------4-
D -4------6-
A -x------x-
E -5------5-

I had a tune that went from Dmaj9 to Amaj9 and then to a couple of others. Very similar.

Dmaj9 Amaj9 Cmaj7 Bm7 A
E -x---x----3----2----0---
B -5---5----5----3----2---
G -6---4----4----2----2---
D -4---6----5----4----2----
A -5---x----3----2----0---
E -x---5----x----x----x----
