Hey,

I'm playing in a Dire Straits Coverband and want to buy a new guitar. I played a Silhouette and was quiet impressed with the Stratocaster Sounds it offers. Would the Music Man Luke II also be suited for my sort of music, or is it more a high-gain guitar? (because of the EMGs)

Thanks

Johannes

I have a Luke II and although it does some pretty nice Strat-sounds, for the sound you're going for, the Silhouette would be the better choice IMHO.

Maybe you should try an Albert Lee Model as well...!

Hi! Well i think the Luke can cover a lot of ground but to be honestly the Luke is more on the gainy side otherwise it sounds a bit sterile imho... a Silhouette Special SSS would be the best choice!

Don´t fire me here but... if you want to play in a Dire Straits or Mark Knopfler coverband you should go for a good ´58 Les Paul and a good ´60 Strat  ...i play a lot of DS and MK and my first choice are the Strat and the LP.

Sorry, the guitar i played was a silhouette special - I made a mistake in my first post. I compared the Silhouette Special (HSS) to a Fender Strat Deluxe and for me the MM offered better sounds, especially the neck PU was a lot better than the Fender. Although Fender's new noisless pickups do a great job, the MM noiseless circuit beats it all.

@Dizzy: Right, i got it ;)

Does anyone know what's so special about the 2007 Limited Edition of the Silhouette Special? My local dealer can offer me this guitar for a very attractive price. I think i will buy this one, because it is 200€ cheaper than the regular Silhouette Special.

I don't think you can go wrong with either a AL or a Silo S with 3 singles.
Myself, I like the bright snap the AL has.:)

just about all (if not every single one) of the LE models for a given year[/o] offer a special finish and/or another cosmetic difference (hardware color etc).

this should not be confused with the BFR models which are another story.

Sounds really good! What amp were you running that though? EL84/34 tubes? Sounds a bit fat for a position 2...

Thanks mate.

The Silo went into the PSA-1 to add just a little dirt, then Alesis Quadraverb 2 in the effects loop for a bit of reverb, then into the EL34 equipped MusicMan 410-HD.

The MM had just been revalved & biased with a nice 12AX7 and a set of matched Winged C's. Bright switch off, Deep switch on.

That amp always gives phenomenal tone - the original speakers from 1972'ish have a lot to do with it - I've run my Mesa 20/20 (EL84) through them too, sounds sweet.

I reckon Finger style (no nails) always gives a fatter tone too - takes the edge off and gives a bit more meat.

Take nothing away from the Silo though - it sounds awesome in all positions, and it definately the ONLY axe in my collection for this tone.

:)
