Well, you'll be happy to know that I'm going to bite the bullet and have decided to replace my I----z fretted bass with a MM. (I'm already playing a beautiful SR fretless.)

I'm leaning towards the Sterling HS...Really like that puppy. (Sorry, Bongoloids)

My question to you is that I would love to do a custom paint job on the bass and would rather go on recommendation than just pulling the name out of a hat. You know, someone who knows what they are doing and won't switch out the electronics! ;)

I would prefer someone close to where I live (Long Island, NY) but all options will be considered as my son works for the airlines and travel is fairly easy for me.

Thanks for any and all suggestions!

Michael Dolan!

Hi Strummer - Thanks for the suggestion but can I assume that if you're in Sweden that's he's in Sweden as well or is that someone in the States?

The wife is good but there are limits... :p

I second Michael Dolan, he does excellent finish work at a reasonable rate.

Check out Marty Bell - martybellfinishing.com - he did a nice job on my SUB5 - silver flake - see my pix album. He's in San Diego, CA, but all you do is drop the neck of the body and take a few parts off the bass like knobs, strap buttons, bridge and he'll take care of the electronics removal - unless you want your local shop to do it. Marty has many pics on his site and he's been doing OEM work for years, so he's no amateur. He's doing a refin for me right now on another bass that had a tung oil finish - we're going gloss. And his poly finishes are not as thick as most, so you don't lose all your tone. Then, get a good double wall box and pack it well - or if you're concerned about it, send the whole bass in the original case + box as shipped from EB/MM and Marty is reasonable with assembly charges. I've had no trouble with FedEx ground - they don't beat stuff up, but if you have airline access, make a trip to sunny San Diego!
