use of effects or "as is" sound ?

Hello everybody again.

I was wondering, as I'm happy of my live setup using only head and cabinet, if some of you use some effects added.

Just to know how is your "ideal" bass sound.

I hope to hear many opinions.

Thanks very much.

My ideal sound is without effects, but I have a GK Diesel Dawg overdrive that I use occasionally when my guitar player goes into a lead and we need some fat, crunchy, distortion to hold down the rhythm.

Hi

Not really an effect .... but I use a tuner pedal to keep on top of any tuning issues on stage.

Plus a bit of chorus on certain songs.

I also use an Akai Unibass for Octave / guitar line to fill out certain songs during guitar solos.

And an Akai Deep Impact (synth pedal) on certain projects of mine and for home recording more abstract material. Used very sporadically live.

In the process of buying one of the new AHX Bass Mig Muff pedals for a bit of fuzz ....

Trick is in my opinion not to rely on tons of effects ... use when appropriate. To me a good bass / amp sound is the core to my playing, I use effects to enhance certain songs.

I don't use effects so much like a chorus, delay or distortion. I have a compressor/limiter rack mount and a dual 15 band eq...I like a nice thick clean sound for bass. But, that is me.

Bass > X2 Rackmount Wireless > Korg DTR-1000 Tuner > SansAmp Rackmount RBI > SVT4-Pro > Compressed with a DBX266xl through the amp's effects loop.

Then all that goes through 2 Ampeg SVT810's.

I like my tone to have a nice growl, good tonal range of highs, lows, and mids, and be loud haha.

used to own a wha pedal which is useful in some ocassions but most of the time plug and play for me. Recording is another thing. Ill add a few things in there (delay, reverb, maybe a little fuzz) to spice things up but live situations plug and play.

I'll occasionally use a Korg AX3000b that I purchased a while back when I thought bass effects were cooler than Rick Astley.

Now, I usually plug right into the amp, maybe a tuner.

Thinking about a Sansamp.

I must be the only one who is really into effects!

I run through an EHX Qtron, EHX bass Microsynth, Mu-tron Phasor, Moog Bass MuRF an EHX Big Muff. The EHX POG, Moog Freqbox and Low pass filter are coming my way soon. I just realised that there is a lot of Electro harmonix there...

I play funk mainly, but I like to make drum 'n bass sounds too. That's what the effects are for, and I don't usually use them (all) live.

I'm in the process of putting my old guitar effects on to a board to use with the Bongo. I really like them and use them to make up for my obvious lack of talent!!!

Well, it sounds like you are asking two different questions here.

a) Yes I do use effects pedals: wah, chorus, flanger, distortion, octaver, tuner.
But I don't use my effects as my 'sound' that runs the entire time I'm playing.

b) My ideal bass tone is my tube amps. I dial in a tone that's thick with low mids, and the tube amps provide alot of growl and punch.

You have a point there.

I have to admit that the second "hidden" question is not well formed.

The question is if you have to rely heavily on effects on an entire gig let's say to obtain a sound that satisfy you.

Thanks for pointing it ;).

You obviously never checked out syciprider's board pics, or AussieMark's (...or mine). I'd love to hear how you get along with the Murf!
I havn't checked those pics. I will!

The Murf is a wonderful creation, I'll record some samples if you would like to hear. It creates some amazing percussive effects that sounds great on a drum track.

On the other side of the question, my bass sound is a stingray with many low mids, bit of bass and plenty of compression!

No. The main sound comes from the StingRay, then there's some crunchy overdrive added by the SansAmp RBI or the SansAmp PBDDI (depending on which rig I have with me). The effects are used as that: Effects - to enhance certain parts of songs.

I'd love to!!!

(actually, I'd hate to -- it will probably make me buy one... ;))
