I've heard this time and time again used by Jeff Healey and Joe Satriani. I'm sure many other have too. I don't know what it is, and was wondering if anyone can tell me.

If you listen to John Mayer - Where The Light Is - Belief at 4:20, there's this thing that sounds like a distortion/octave hybrid on steriods. Can anyone confirm what it is for me?

Thanks.

Satch uses a EH POG on the track Super Colossal. I've also seen him use a Whammy. Jeff seems to be adding only one octave up and some distortion so any of those should suffice. I don't know what distortion to use thought. Maybe it's some kind of hybrid 2-in-1 pedal like you suggest.

Hey, sounds like an Octavia. The Voodoo Lab Proctavia gets this sound. It's a Hendrix thing.

I believe John Mayer is using his Adrenalinn I beat synced effects box with some kind of envelope filter.

Check out the audio demos down the page. There are a few from John himself.

yeah. depending on the song, satch favours the ulimate octave (fulltone). this is a fuzz pedal combined with an octave up from the original note.

however, for a softer, less harsh fuzz/octave satch (and also john mayer) use a hendrix octavia pedal.

I asked basically the same question when the "Continuum" album came out. I think that we came to the same consensus that it was an octave fuzz of some sort. I may have to check out that Hendrix pedal. I love that effect. Oh yeah...that an a Univibe. :D

It's not... according to JM (on some John Mayer Forum Site), it's a EHX Micro Synth into an overdriven amp.

notice how john doesn't use his bridge a whole lot, my suspicion is that its actually his bridge pickup that makes that sound

WHAT??? HOW???

well, i recently did some wiring thing on my guitar, which involved scooping mids, an overdrive thats not too heavy and not too mid boosty, AND rolling my tone down to 0 (requires that wiring thing i did) on the bridge, i manage to replicate that sound on an american amp

alternatively, you can use a cocked wah, play around a lil but it should be around the upper range, if you have ur wah done the hendrix way (ie, more low down) you might not get it, and you need a wah that has a similar sound structure to an RMC wah (the cry baby's and vox's i've tried it on don't work).
