Ill probably be shot for this response -effects ! -yes are cool ,however -jazz band at school -Spice up your tone -and your chops-best effect would be a simple chous for super sustain -asides=--- my suggestion is ----a few-- here --and there-- double and or - triple stops --in tastefull places-or maybe use a few more chromatic passing tones in the walks-- or more ghost note ennunciations -ect-- that always gets attention-and -yes again effects are cool

For a jazz band you'd be better off buying a hat than a multi-effects pedal. However, if you insist of purchasing a multi-effects unit, the Boss ME-50B is a solid unit for the price and dead easy to use (no menus to navigate etc).

For jazz I don't think you need an effects pedal. The money would be better puts towards weed or some booze. Maybe some french fries after the weed.

I do have to agree with Bovinehost here, too many effect get in the way of the tone. Every once in a while I like to use a filter petal for some coolness but really I just use slight overdrive from my overdrive petal to give the tone some grit.
Find a good tone and just rock out

Would have to disagree.. Effects on bass, used in the right context, and not too often, can give a song a bit more grit or funk. A clean bass sound is one of the nicest sounds i have ever heard, however a bass sound with an effect also sounds sweet.

Jazz Band? Effects?
If you're aching to part with your hard earned cash:
- EBS Multi-Comp. It's hardly an effect, but under some circumstances it does tame the Bongo a little. I use it with my SWR SR to even it out a little. Really, I only notice it when it's 'off.'
- Rumor is the VT Bass pedal gives a little tube warmth to SS amps. Haven't tried it yet.
That's it. No fuzz, wah wah...etc. 'Specially when playing in a jazz band (as I did 30+ years ago).

To each their own. Personally, between the EQ on my amp and EQ on my ray - I find I have enough options to figure-out as is. I don't want to become more of a knob twiddler, have more links in the chain, more confusion etc.. The more buttons, pedals, knobs - the more complexity, doubt, points of failure. Keeping it simple is often a good strategy. IMHO - a bass is supposed to sound like a bass - not a synthesizer.

Anyways, a Phaser, Flanger or Chorus can be nice to spice up the bass sound, especially when soloing. I love the simple MXR Phase 90.

I recommend buying an overdrive pedal and cranking it. Then give the guitarist a run for the money. Reason being if you don't do it now, that guitarist will turn into a ego freak and everything any other bass player plays with him will revolve around his solo's. On a serious note, I like to use chorus only. And no I don't have anything against jazz musicians. I was asked to play in my schools Jazz band my freshman year, but I opted to go play at a place called Jimmy comers tractor shed and play southern rock with a bunch of older rednecks. Best decision I ever made.

don't waste your money... instead invest in time so you can get better with techniques and learn to play your instrument more creatively... that goes much much further than you cranking out some root notes using the latest overdrive pedal.... yep.
