I'm a proud daddy and gotta relay the story. My 8 year old, 2nd grade son took it on himself to add to his daily practice and learn his school song. He then tried out for the school orchestra (2nd and 3rd graders). He's the only 2nd grader who made it. He used the school acoustic guitar for the tryout, but will be playing electric (his choice) for rehersals and performances. 6 performances are planned for the year. Although he's not normally allowed to touch my Axis SS (we have several other electrics always available to him), I'm thinking of letting him use it for performances as a surprise. I'm sure it'll be a thrill for him.

He does pick stuff up pretty quickly. Plays keyboards as well. I do get a kick out of watching looks from other people when we play around at Guitar Center and he's sitting down, playing the tapping to the end of Eruption and Angus' part to Thunderstruck. He also plays Thunderstruck on the keyboard.

I understand where you're coming from with that. My oldest had 2 sports overlap once......we won't be doing that again!
