If you want to put out a Music Man style bass, you can put the pickup in the same place, have an active preamp with 2- or 3-band eq, have a big bridge, same amount of frets, same fingerboard radius, same neck dimentions, same scale length, and same non-paint neck.

What you can't do is make it look like it IS a Music Man bass - oval pickguard and tuner arrangement (am I missing something?). These things are protected legally so Ernie Ball/Music Man has an identity in the marketplace. Trying to pass a bass off as a Music Man bass requires permission from Ernie Ball.

There is nothing stopping a company from making their own instrument with a unique visual identity but familiar sound. There's plenty of Music Man style basses out there that don't look like a Music Man. It becomes a problem when a company tries to take another company's image (which takes a large investment in time and money) and tries to pass it off as its own.

Grey goose - what an ID10T!

I don't blame you BP for going after the guy selling the copyright infringing bass, yeah people can claim that they didn't know there was anything wrong with it, but that isn't YOUR fault, if they didn't read up on the laws regarding this sort of thing before opening an online shop selling rubbish copies that aren't licenced then that's entirely their fault and in my opinion they deserve EVERYTHING they get.

Also, fwiw i think grey gooose probably was the offending manufacturer who didn't see what he did wrong. Again, his fault, if this is indeed the case. I also like how he says he knows that you guys didn't send a warning letter or give them a phone call. I could be wrong, but i'm pretty sure this kind of information isn't published on the internet, why would it be? So it's more than likely the guy, or he's at least in cahoots with the guy.

That's my 0.02

I notice they did not send us a warning letter saying they were going to sell counterfeit EBMM's . . . .

And so another saga comes to a fitting end.

Wonder Dog again scores one for truth, justice and the American way.

Plus, I got to ban someone, which always lifts my spirits.

Jack

PS: Just kidding about the banning. Even when it's well deserved, I don't enjoy it.

PSS: Okay, I can think of twice I enjoyed it but that was a long time ago.
