Could Someone Like Me Be the Key to Bongo Success?

After seeing this thread yesterday, I feel compelled to make my first post on this forum, even though I'm usually just a "read only" type person. I recently bought timmyfivestrings Stealth Bongo 5HH and I'm enjoying it immensely. First some background on me. I'm a life long Rickenbacker player who's tried other basses but was not impressed enough with the others to accumulate quantities of them for whatever reason. When the Bongo first came out I thought it was funny looking but didn't dismiss it outright due to looks, rick's are kind of funny looking to some players also even though I have always liked the uniquely curved bodies. A number of things have happened since the Bongo first appeared that changed the way I looked at it.

1. I used to come to this forum back in 06 to see what everybody was saying about the new Markbass amps. Occassionally I would see Jack's posts on his Bongo experiences and some of that would stick in the back of mind for some reason.

2. I like progressive rock and bands like Rush, Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, etc. When I saw that John Myung was going to play a Bongo 6 that loosened me up a little bit and I started to warm up to the way the Bongo looked. I also saw BP's video on the Bongo about that time and was impressed with how the bass was created.

3. The event that put me over the edge was seeing Colin Edwin (Porc Tree) playing a Stealth Bongo on the Arriving Somewhere DVD. I was using the video to try out my new Epik Conquest subwoofer that I just added to my home theater and was totally blown away by the way that bass looked and sounded. He had that Steath strung BEAD and that B string was kicking some serious ass through my sub. Even if you don't listen to this kind of music you need to get this DVD to see what a Bongo can do, the drummer is really good too.

Like I said, I'm really enjoying the Bongo and really like the ergonomics and versatility it has as far as playability and tone are concerned. Somebody like me is not supposed to like this bass (I'm old and set in my ways) but I find myself thinking about getting another one. And my 26 y.o. daughter saw it last night and she said it was pretty (she's not a bass player) :)

welcome markbass99 It is funny that us old guys have been more receptive...I guess looks arent that important as we get the pleasure of lookng in the mirror...

Having said that the =Bongo was very well regarded in the international design circles...it won awards...BMW featured it as an example of great organic design...General motors used it and I think that Oddjobs bass was a prop for a international auro show.....

So realize that I took great pride in the achievements that its looks accomplished.....

Well, I'm glad you decided to take part. Welcome, former lurker!

That makes my day (and my day needed making). Since Bongo Day One, I've only ever told the truth as I see it - it's a great bass, a great design and it makes me sound better than I really am. Hard to go wrong with that, especially the last bit.

Like I said, I'm really enjoying the Bongo and really like the ergonomics and versatility it has as far as playability and tone are concerned. I guess a lot of us "old and set in our ways" guys are maybe not quite so set in our ways.

Again - welcome.

I think it's a really cool bass on all sides. The only thing that could make it as cool as it gets would be translucent and natural color options :p

Well what got me to even want to try out a Bongo was this forum. A couple of Bongo owners were so passionate about the basses performance that I was encouraged to try one.

That's way cool, ronnyG. Bongoloid Power, baby!!

Hey, for me the MOST important factor is the sound. Of course it needs too feel right as well since if it didn't, I wouldn't play it much. The Bongo has the sound and feel hands down..I can't imagine anyone denying that.

As far as it's design..yes, for me it did take getting used and it continually grows on me. I am one who never thought it was ugly.. but a work of art if anything and appreciate that, I just wasn't sure it was for me until I tried one.

Most of my friends are musicians of all ages and they all think the Bongo is killer. But I would assume a musician is most concerned with sound/tone if they are serious.

As far as an audience...I could not imagine anyone really caring that much about the look of the bass...the bass player maybe...that would depend. But if a band sounds great..which the bass is a BIG part of contributing too, I don't think opinions on the basses physical shape mean squat regardless.

A friend of mine was at a Goo Goo Dolls concert with huge video screen behind the band. He said that at one point during a lull in the show, they went to a closeup of Robby Takac and you could hear the whole crowd gasp in horror.

I still can't get over anyone having any issues with the way it looks. So it doesn't look like yet another 7MIC product..! Geesh! If you're secure enough in your manhood to wear a pastel shirt (or in your womanhood to operate a table saw) then you should have no issues with trotting out in public with a striking, award winning design that truly epitomizes the fusion of function and form.

May I just not like it without implicitly being a moron? Like other great stuff that's just not my thing lookswise?

Of course; we Bongoloids are not imperialists, or members of the Borg ("we shall make your individuality our own", etc).

But I just can't wait to hear your thoughts after you've played one, Oli. Because once you have, you might find that ...
resistance is futile. :)
