hi there. i have a sr4 wich i love like my own baby. unfourtounely it is giving me bad times. when i roll the treble half or full position theres a buzz. if i touch the strings, bridege etc. dissapears. so i took it to a tech. guess what? accordyng to him nothing was wrong. he checked connections for grounding problems with a tester. and nothing. he checked for cold solderings. nothing. everyting was right. at last he states the most sad thing " that pickup or the electronics are not that good" more or less, it was a cheap pickup. he let me down. what do you thing about this. and i was there. he checked everything. and the saddest thing was he plugged this piece of %$#$% bass and was pretty quiet. also he said maybe that preamp is very sensitive to high frequencies. ?should i take it to someone else (he was not a luthier) but he really knows about electronics. or just sit down and live with it is it normal? tahnks to all. do you guys get some hum-noise when your treble is at top. noise comes when i dont touch strings etc.

*sigh*

I just don't have the energy for this.

First thing. "....he states the most sad thing " that pickup or the electronics are not that good" more or less, it was a cheap pickup."

He's the only tech in the world to know this. Everyone else thinks they're damned good stuff. What does that tell you? That he doesn't know he has a dimmer switch in his office? That he doesn't ask you how your house is wired? That he doesn't understand an active preamp?

Look, ALL basses, especially active ones, are sensitive to electrical signals to some degree. Environmental wiring can and will cause a fabulous 60 cycle buzz, especially if you're boosting the frequencies that are most sensitive. (Dime the treble? I wouldn't, but okay.)

If your connections are all good, then it IS environmental, at least 98% of the time. There is no way anyone on the internet can tell you what exactly is going on without getting some eyeballs on your bass in its natural environment, but if I were you, I'd get a second opinion.

If this guy can look inside the electronics cavity of a Music Man bass and tell you with a straight face that the stuff is not that good, then he's blowing smoke up your wazoo.

This might be a stupid question, but have you tried using different leads?
Ive had a similar problem and it was all solved by changing leads

dont get me wrong. of courase when he said that i was thinkiung "what the 6&(/(67 are you talking, it is a Ray" but that was his opinion. fortuolnely i dont take too much attention at thtat. I KNOW WHY I BOUGHT MY BABY. so i am not worried about what he said. and yes tried differents outlets, cables (good ones) and amps. same thing. i am going to take it to a luthier. but what i am really concern is the point some people say their RAys are like a sleeping baby. so......................... advices all heared

Lots of basses do this, even most passive basses. I personally have my fingers on the strings the entire time I'm playing so it's not a big deal for me.

If you dime the treble too much that's gonna happen most of the time, but if the bass wasn't doing that before it's time to take it to a real tech.

I have shielded the cavity behind two of my 2 band Rays and that helped a great deal. I had the same hum and it drove a certain studio engineer nuts, but I really wanted to use this particular Stingray so I experimented with different shielding that has worked with other basses in the past and bingo. The copper shielding tape can be purchased from Stewart MacDonald.

Have you tried playing this bass in different locations? Does it make this noise everywhere?

I have "bad" electricity in my house (no grounds). Every bass I have makes noise and buzzes. Once I get out of the house and play somewhere else, they are all dead quiet.

Does your StingRay sound any different (e.g. "thinner") than any other stock 'Ray you try at a store? If so, the pickup could have converted itself from humbucker to single coil...

How about this.

1. Take it to your dealer or an actual REAL tech.
2. Call Customer Service.

This is the exact thing Pops talks about all the time. You will get a gazillion different answers as to what your problem (if any) could be. Use option 1 or 2.

I only state this as this is your second thread on "problems" and both of them could have and would have been solved using option 1 or 2 above.
