Forgive me if this question has already been asked and answered somewhere in this 27pg thread. But has it been determined if the pickups (whether single coil or humbucker) will have ceramic or alnico magnets in them?

The entire reply was a joke. "throaty" when describing a sound is generally used to describe a vehicles exhaust system. I was just playing around with diction. Kind of like when a wine taster is saying things like "it is a big round flavor..with a hint of mahogony..fruity yet nutty". Ah...Just shut up and chug it down..lol

I think it's to do with not making the low string sounding overly bright

Interesting. I would think that having the pickup tilted with the bottom forward would give it a more balanced tone. Seems to me that the G string (on a 4 string) would be less twangy and the E string brighter thus giving it a more consistent level.

I'm by no means any type of "expert" on this stuff, just an intuitive hunch.

What is your feel and/or experience with this BP or anyone from SLO?

You may be correct. It is possible that the design is for that reason: to have the bass strings be more bassy and have the treble strings more clean sounding.

I think my question was trying to find out the difference between the pickup tilted top forward -vs- bottom forward ( / vs \ ). The pic w/BP shows the pickup tilted top forward. I was wondering what the diff would be bottom forward.

Seems that the outcome would be different based on direction. I only say this based on the assumption that tilting has a tonal change as opposed to leaving it vertical (|) as most basses are.

The position of the pickup is a factor in it's tone. The closer to the bridge, the brighter (and potentially "thinner") the tone. So, if the pup is tilted closer to the bridge on the thinner strings..the thinner strings will be brighter and thinner sounded.

With that said, I also would think in "theory" that tilting the pup the other way should produce a more "balanced" tone overall amongst the strings. I wonder if anyone has ever tried this. Now we all know Fender Strats and Teles use a tilt towards the bridge on the thinner strings (not to mention the "stagger" of the P-Bass pickup towards the bridge on the thinner strings)..and Fender has been at this for quite a while so there must be something to it.

Actually Jimi Hendrix used a right handed Strat strung backwards..hence his pup tilt was reveresed. I would assume the effect should be even more dramatic on a bass due to the larger gauge of the strings..hmmm, I am tempted to try this myself for the sake of the argument, but on a cheap bass of course..don't want to route out a nice MM for a science project.

Paul Gilbert did this too on his revers ibanez iceman.

I have seen some spector basses that have P-Bass pickups reversed. I would guess it is for a different balance in tone.

As for Fender...they don't tend to change a design once issued.

Good point on Hendrix. Hendrix's tone was awesome and had great balance - IMHO. The position of the pickup may explain that. Besides, of course, his great talent

maybe? You think? Yeah well time has proven that it does. However, curious minds need to know if something can be made better or unique. The simple answer "it just sounds good" works for me..but without questioning, experimentation and innovation we would still be in the stone age. Well some still are but thankfully we have some out there willing to take risks..or just plain whacky..thats all good to me.
