so, in other words, you don't like any guitar players? ;)

Yeah, all that high pitch whedilllllly whedilllllly whedilllllly hurts my poor little ears…:eek::eek:

On a more serious note I have decided to honestly participate. These are three of my personal favorites. (I understand that most may not necessarily consider them the best but they make me smile.)

1) George Benson (Oh what I would do to play bass for GB!)
2) Andy Summers
3) Justin Hawkins (The Darkness)

I think I deserve congratulations for not writing anything at all about Avril Lavigne and flutes, because I certainly gave it some thought.

Congratulations, I know it was tough.

However, Avril Lavigne must be good since she has a signature series Tele... I think it's just a cheapo stock squire with a checkered pickguard, but hey..it's more then I have.

1.) David Gilmour
2.) Nuno Bettencourt
3.) Steven Wilson

and then some...

I gave this some more thought, and have to say it's unfair to pick any "top 3". It's so hard to say what it means to choose one over the other. A couple of names came up in this thread where I thought "good choice, I had forgotten about this one!". So, a couple more guitarists who had a large influence on my musical development were:

Steve Lukather, EVH, Steve Vai, Robert Fripp, Adrian Belew

And there's also a category that get's totally forgotten when naming "3 top guitarists", which are the great guitar duos. Especially in the 80's, many bands hand not one guitarist but two who complemented and pushed each other, eventually reaching brilliance. Better than any of them as soloist.

I have lots of great guitar players in my "favorites" list, but I always give a special mention as #1 to Edward Van Halen. To me, no other guitarist blended true virtuosity with cool, enjoyable music like him. He's a true genius to me.

Next to him... I can't mention just two. I'd say Frank Zappa, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmy Page, Nuno Bettencourt and Ace Frehley, who may have a limited vocabulary, but has an extremely personalized style. I mean, you can hear a recording without knowing which band it is, but you instantly know that the lead guitar player is Ace. That's much more valuable than being able to play 50000 notes per minute.
